Nutrition health and Weight loss

Thanks peanut..I hope you all get to this point as well..... around here spinning is usually inside the gym as it is too dangerous to ride a bicycle on the local roadways...That means i must join a gym..Planet Fitness is only $10/month:D... Wallking i can do within my subdivison.. but if i am in the gym..there are eliptical walking and bicycle machines as well...

Interesting to note that i will need to increase my daily intake of carbs in order to fuel exercise...Like i did over 40 years ago as a lean mean running machine...At 128# and running 10 miles daily i could eat and drink whatever i wanted without any significant gain in weight as any carbs were burned off.
And to think that physically I have reversed 40 years of physical decadence is nothing short of amazing to me...I could not be happier about it...
The short term sacrifices are well worth the long term goals for better health and nutririon...
Y'all keep at it! dont give up...;)

Ben,
What kind of carbs? Fruit? For me, I have come to believe a lot of what I was eating is bad for me in any circumstances. Pasta, for example. I learned recently that pasta in Europe is not the same as in the US. I think it’s never good over here. I can’t but sauerkraut or kimchi here, either. It’s all been heated and is dead. I’m going down a rabbit hole.
I’m thinking certain fruits and vegetables will be good to add after my fat middle is gone. What are you adding in, Ben?

thats a very sensible solution Max. I hate gyms with a passion and love cycling but like you I find it too dangerous to cycle near where I live so i quit cycling 2 years ago...Too many near misses with cars and vans. I do miss my cycling though

I have tried using a gym for cardio years ago but never seem to be able to stick at it for one reason or another. Spinning classes are better as they have better bikes but its nothing like as interesting as being out on the road with a cycle club for an early morning 3-4 hour ride with fresh air , chitchat and all the sounds and sights of the countryside.

Once again you have motivated me to get off my lazy ass and do something about getting some regular exercise.......thank you max

@jetmechmarty .basically anything with carbs...mostly breads and some low carb cookies..For myself i have no other issues with diet so even sspaghetti is not going to affect my diet so long as i am burning it off...I have not added fruit back into the diet but potatos and some corn products are back...
My main goal is to reduce my high blood pressure to the point that i no longer need my daily BP meds..that is highly debatable though as to wether or not i can attain that goal.

Marty it depends on what sort of diet you wish to follow and what your objectives are .
No matter what type of pasta you talk about it is all made with carbohydrates and that means starch and sugar. Every time you eat any carbohydrate (and that includes root vegetables and fruit ) you are consuming sugar.

your Liver will convert that starch sugar into stored fat so you will be fighting a constant losing battle that you cannot win.
Its like filling a bucket with a hole in the bottom.;)

If you have lost weight and achieved your goals and then start re eating all the foods you have been avoiding then the weight will all go back on again unless you fast or starve yourself .
You need to stick to the Keto diet with occasional carbs, as max outlines ,to maintain weight and stop the liver storing sugars as body fat .
All the time you are not eating carbs and sugar, your body will burn your body fat and convert it to blood glucose for energy so you'll maintain weight

FWIW I really find gyms boring too..i'd prefer the constant outdoor change of scenery..a mountain bike used to do that for me in Nj..off the roadways and into the woods or fields anywhere cars were not...Again..around here good parks and bike trails need the car and bike carrier to get there and back...as there isnt any acessable off road areas nearby..

My blood pressure appears to have dropped dramatically in the past 6 months from 180/106 down to typically 132/79 ! I can assume that it is a result of cutting out carbs and sugar and lowering my blood glucose levels.
What is your fasting blood glucose level now first thing in the mornings max ?

same here max there are plenty of great cycle paths and quiet roads locally but it would mean me loading the bike in the car to get to them and I only have a car every 4 days for 4 days....there you see I'm already looking for excuses why I can't do it lol :laugh2:

I should note further that my daily carb intake is still low..and it isnt a daily thing. As I still maintain aa 20g limit most of the time. This has me in a fine state of balance between ketosis and non ketosis ...It only takes me 2 days to regain ketosis after a day or 2 of increased carb intake.

yes this is exactly what I find too. It is a fine balance because if I keep stuffing cake in my gob for a few days my blood glucose levels rocket .

Blood glucose monitors are a very effective way for Diabetics to monitor ketosis and Insulin and they are very cheap and easy to use. They are also good at highlighting carbohydrate intolerance too

If you test first thing every morning after you wake before consuming anything then you get an instant record of whether your body is in ketosis (ie non Diabetic low blood glucose level ) or above the Diabetic threshold. If you are in Ketosis your BG level should below the Diabetes threshold ie 4-6mmol/L

if your blood glucose levels after 8-12 hours over night fasting are high ( ie above 7mmol/L then you know that either your Pancreas is not producing sufficient Insulin or you have insulin resistance ie pre-Diabetes.

Talk about going down a rabbit hole..LOL I just never have paid attention that closely to those stats. I usually go by the yearly tests at the Dr's office. I'm too cheap to buy into monitors and test strips although i really should...

max ..you cheapskate lol :laugh2:

Actually the readers are cheap enough its the actual test strips that work out expensive.
One thing it would be worth buying one for is to test which carbohydrates cause the highest spike of your blood glucose and the slowest recovery . They would be the carbs to avoid . You might discover some innocuous carbs that are safe to eat and supplement your keto diet

That is a very good point..I cant argue with that ... getting me to do it is another matter entirely...LOL

that made me larf lol:) will we see a piccy of you in your Lycra leotards on the spinning bike lol?;)
ummm..no I dont wear them things...ha ha ha...
Was just looking.. this is the best rated BG meter..
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...ns-20&linkId=2cbb7095e36ec3493a791d53768466ff

The Bayer unit is ranked 2nd merely because it doesn't have Bluetooth connectivity..The meter is cheaper but the lancets are more expensive than the first model listed..

heres a great option for a healthy satisfying snack thats chock full of great nutrients zero carbohydrates or sugar and a great little fat energy boost when you feel peckish between meals. Just sprinkle with some rock salt and pepper to taste .

I try to remember to boil 2-3 boiled eggs every day to use as a cold snack throughout the day. instead of reaching for a biscuit, cake pastry or chocolate , reach for a boiled egg. Only around 100 calories for those of you that calorie count ;)

by crikey they are expensive monitors max. I have a cheapy version without bluetooth cos I'm a cheapskate lol. Seriously do you really need a bluetooth feature ? All of them have a memory feature as standard ... most with built in low and high glucose alarms . If you are thinking of buying one check the prices of the test strips first as some are ridiculous $$$$

Never use Bluetooth..so I dont care for that...The Bayer unit is $15 but all the other stuff makes it expensive. Not convinced enough to go down the rabbit's hole ...
