Stuck pistons

Just as 5Twins and W W explained, but if they are really stuck u might have to resort to pumping them out with a grease gun. i did some about a year ago and when i saw grease come out of the one i held it in a vice until the other came out. A little more messy than air but somtimes u need a little more omph.

If you use grease , how do you completely flush the grease from the caliper? Mike

Mike you can clean the grease with a solvent and blow out the passages with air. I prefer using air to get the pistons out but either way works. They're pretty simple to clean up once you get everything apart.

Hi Guys, I've got the old locked up front brake problem on my 73 TX650, i took the caliper apart today after reading a thread about the same issue, however my caliper dosn't have the floating design, it appears that only the pistons move, how do i get them out ?

Cheers :banghead:
What is the floating design? Or how can I tell a difference for my caliper on a 72 TX650?

Yours isn't floating either, it has an inner and an outer piston, caliper is bolted to the fork leg with no sliding action. basically all calipers 72-76 are the same design.
72 MODEL is an XS2, 73 MODEL is a TX650. I believe you have a 73 TX650 ie blue paint.

Okay. I figured I did not have a design as such. Just thought I would stay on track and make sure. Yes I have a 73. Well it was made in December 1972. Sold in 73! So I go back and forth. Yes to the blue paint! Exhaust wrap is off and many things have been done to it since this photo! She is coming out nice.

Just rebuilt forks, new gators and all. Shocks on rear were shot. Found a awesome company threw my XS650 club Australia called Ikon Suspension and replaced them. They look really good and feel even better. Almost look original. Cleaned and balanced the carbies. Got new pod filters. New oil. Polished the cases and pipes. New wiring for lights. Mounted a horn. Grips, mirrors and lights for speedos. All in the last month and a half. Just need this brake sorted out before my up coming trip to Phillip Island for the Moto GO! Crunch time has been the case all month.

TwinLewi I made this piece and put a piece of old inner tube under it as a gasket. You might have to push it back in a few times once it starts to move. Just don't put your face over it cuz when it goes., Kapowyow! I wrapped a rag around mine to catch it when it finally popped.

Or your forehead.
Yep, per my suggestion of not to put your face over it...... When I was doing mine and researched it on here that was a suggestion I took to heart. Probably learned through experience.

Awesome. Thanks WingedWheel! I just read your post from that how to page this morning. Okay sounds good. I will stand back and watch for a bang.

You're welcome TwinLewi. Just remember that where its stuck is not bottomed out so a little oil and a clamp will help move it in to get it started. I think it took me about three or four times of moving it in and out before it finally came out. I knew it was getting ready to happen but it still scared the crap outta me when it did because it was WAY louder than I expected.:gun:

Okay! Got the first piston out last night! Brake line side. Was not to bad. Pressed in with a C clamp the used the air to press out. Repeat and repeated. Then finally boom! Had the C clamp in position still. Did not want it flying into my mates 1930 A model. Or our boys. Lol
Now I am having a really hard time getting the bleeder side caliper piston out. We tried all kinds of tricks. I need to try the bolt set up recommended above by wingedwheel.
I left the original bolts at home 35 min away to make that set up. Pressed the piston in and was blowing air thinking we were starting our procedure again. Pushed in more and realized that we weren’t blowing piston out. Now liston is back really far to the point I can see the rubber seal a bit.

Here is my set up to block the air for the other half of the caliper. The carpet has rubber on the back side. I placed a o ring in the slot as well. Rubber spacers on bolts side. Let’s hope this works. Found the metal bracket at Bunnings (a Home Depot) that had the same bolt pattern if I rotated it a bit!
