View attachment 151795 Citrus paint remover on the Aluminum wheels looks like an easy and great idea. Question, Does the finish on the spoke nipples suffer ? I would think so.
Can the wheels be stripped carefully so as to not damage the spoke nipples ?

If the question is, does the "gold" stay on the spoke ends, the answer is yes.

Yes they can. I use a squirt of penetrating oil and a good fitting broad faced spanner(wrench). Loosen a quarter turn at a time all the way round and with luck you can reassemble after polishing.
 
Some of todays progress, resurface rotor with 120 on a DA, spot paint the ends of exhaust with dark gray metallic exhaust paint, and ground down original chainguard mounts on the TX swingarm I will be running.
I determined the front mounting location which needs to be established by mountimg stock 76 guard to rear mount, then place a socket with a marker in the front hole of the guard, then move side to side, to establish an axis, then just measure / compare to my original 76 swimgarm to determine the other axis, where they cross is where I will drill and mount a rivet nut. Should match original location although I will mount with chain to confirm, prior to paint.

OK, update, I cut down a piece of ally rod and made a tool to remove my fork damper rod.
Ive read quite a bit about the famous Minton Mods, mostly from MR 5 Twins.
The lowest holes have sizes which allow either a 7/32 or 13/64 bit inside, based on advice, all 4 holes should be expanded up to 1/4.
The upper hole allows a 1/16 drill bit, which I am to run all the way thru so I will also do that.
Question, the head of my damper has a red ring component, which possibly acts like a oil or cleaner ring on a piston. This rimg has a break in it, is it supposed to? I will find out if the other side matches.

Yes, it's normal for that red ring to have a split on the side. The Minton Mods were conceived for the later 35mm forks. The later damper rods differ slightly from your early ones in that they are pretty much wide open at the top .....

I've been giving some thought to how the Minton Mods might be applied to the early forks and I'm thinking the more closed off damper rod tops may be the "choke point" impeding oil flow. Along with slightly enlarging the bottom holes, you may need to open the tops up more somehow. Unfortunately, the holes up there are very close to the top edge so they couldn't be drilled out very much larger. But maybe you could grind the sides and bottom larger using a high speed cutter in a Dremel? .....

What about small hole on shaft, not shaft head, also have that hole run thru both sides of the shaft?

Regarding the head of the 76 style damper rod, as you can see from my photo here, it appears someone may have already tried to enlarge the 2 lower holes on the head, whatcha think?

Also, these rods currently on Ebay are supposedly for a 75-76, but have a different head than mine, no red ring, and larger lower holes on the head?

I think the two lower holes on the head you're referring to are a roll pin to hold the head on the rod that Yamaha peened in place. Looking at the parts diagrams, it appears your damper rod may be a one year only part, maybe even a mid-year updated part for the '76 model. I think the one in that eBay listing is the older version. The '76 parts diagram lists two damper rods. One part number comes up as only being used on the '76 model. The other part number comes up as being used on the '74, '75, and '76 models. I'm guessing yours is the later damper rod because all the rods after that also had that red bakelite seal ring on the heads.
 
The spring and spring spacer were also changed along with the damper rod.

Yes, I would mimic all the Minton Mod damper rod holes - enlarge the 4 bottom ones slightly and drill the small top one all the way through to create a second hole. I use a #45 drill bit for this small top hole. The Minton Mod article called for slightly enlarging it using a #54 size but I discovered the top hole was already larger than that. That size listing had to be a misprint. I found a #45 size would slightly enlarge it and figured the 4-5 got transposed to 5-4 when the article went to print. Well, that's my theory anyway, and I'm sticking to it, lol. Here's the drill bit sizes I use. I figured out the stock sizes using numbered drill bits from a cheap HF numbered drill bit set. I decided to go with a #1 size for the lower holes because I happen to have lots of them from work. I figured I could always make it larger if need be but it doesn't seem necessary, the fork action is improved with the #1 size.

Question, each side of the battery box has 2 unused threaded mounts, what for?

What a difference some paint remover and 1 day can do? I covered my dirty, greasy wheel and forks in citrus paint remover to remove the clear coat, brushes on like a heavy gel, let it sit 1 day and wash off. NIGHT AND DAY, WILL GET EVEN BETTER ONCE POLISHED!
any brand name on citrus stripper I would assume none are too harsh
