Just post lots of photos and ask all the questions you like. I can see that it is an XS650 Special (perhaps a 1979....?), but it will be important to tell us exactly what year your bike is.

Note that the rear swingarm felt unstable, has side play. I will check the bushings.

That's not so bad, trace one circuit at a time It'll all work out.

The plastic pieces are from your cam chain guide. This is common. You will find lots of threads on this repair. The top end needs to come apart.

There is also a thread in the Tech section of this forum on the repair of the swingarm bushings.

Thank you. In fact I am waiting for the bronze bushings to arrive, shipping is delayed. Is it dangerous to leave the chain guide like this?

Not dangerous. However, with this condition, your cam chain will eventually wear into the aluminum substructure of your cam guide. This will show itself with aluminum particles in your oil. I encourage you to read some of the threads on this issue.

The bronze bushings have arrived after a few weeks. I also clean some parts. Wire brush and a lot of patience, I don't have much tool available.

I've noticed that the pivot tube moves easily from side to side in the bushings, is that normal?
 
You need a new brush holder and new brushes. The parts you have are junk. I think they were wired wrong too. I see a short jumper wire grounding the outer brush full time. It shouldn't be like that. The regulator should control the ground to that outer brush, turning it on and off to regulate charging output. With it grounded full time, your alternator would be running full time, putting out maximum charge all the time.
