need help with my '77 xs650 Not idling and blinkers stay solid

The first time I went over there to help him with his bike, I saw he had a nice 2 car garage with just the bike in there, and a couple of those big rolling toolboxes. I thought "Oh, this will be great .....", that is until I had a look in those toolboxes. Most of the drawers were half empty and what was in there was all jumbled up. The rest of the tools were scattered all over the place, laying on the floor where they had last been used, in cardboard boxes with parts, a real mess. I don't help that guy much anymore, he doesn't deserve it. Let him pay a shop for repairs.
Hope you didn’t needed to find a 10mm socket in that area of space.

I don't usually completely remove the float bowl gasket. When you take the bowl off, the gasket will usually remain stuck to it or the main body. I leave it where it is. I do wipe down the surface of the gasket and the corresponding metal surface on the other part it mounts to, basically a gentle cleaning. When re-assembling, I wet the gasket down with some light lube like WD40 or something. I like to think this softens it up a bit, helps it seal up better, and hopefully prevents it from sticking so it will come apart intact next time. I never put stuff back together dry.
We 'round here use CHAP-STICK on carb gaskets and they don't stick. Got that from cork gaskets on Holley carbs.

There are threads on here about that. Use the search up n the corner with "ATU rod lube" or some such.
I looked up in the TECH section and didn't find a listing.
Perhaps a good write up on it can be put up in the TECH section.

I find that very telling .........weighing up if someone is deserving of your assistance when they ask for help is not a very charitable attitude is it :)

I like to think that when I give my time to helping someone ,I don't count the cost . It isn't always that way I admit but its a good attitude to aspire to;)

I am definitely not picking sides here because I understand where both 5twins and Peanut are coming from. It is nice to help others but sometimes there can be limits on how much to help based on how it is received and acted on.

Anyway, back to my concern , so listening that mikesxs parts are shit(no offense), I put back the old springs, put back the carbs, noticed that the right clamp doesn’t do any work because even after tightening is still lose, so I fired it up, and still the same running only in choke and shuts down after 15-20 second with the smoke coming from the carbs. I have a video of it.

Things I noticed:
Right clamp is lose.
The fuel lines were empty, when I checked after it shut down.

My idea is: the smoke comes because the fuel lines are empty, so no more gas.
Running on choke because the right side has air leak, and carbs are probably not that clean.

Let me know if Im wrong, probably I am

yes I agree too.:)

There are many times that people you try to help either ignore what you have suggested or do something completely different etc and it can be extremely frustrating when some just don't answer questions that are intended to form a diagnosis etc but I wouldn't refuse to help someone because they were a novice ,don't keep their tools tidy , don't follow instructions or are a little cack-handed. They are exactly the people that need our help and advice.

We all have to start somewhere and I am still picking up completely new skills and learning at nearly 70 :)

I find the comment rather incongruous as 5T has been helping owners on this forum for as long as I have been a member over 6 years now and I have never seen him refuse to help someone although I have been the recipient of some rather unfriendly comments from him myself at times. I expect it was one of those stupid off-the-cuff comments that we all make and regret ,when our brains are not fully engaged

yes of course you can upload directly from your PC or tablet whatever .Just the button 'upload your image or file' browse your device for the file and select 'upload' When the file has been uploaded put your cursor on the part of your message where you wish to place the image and then select 'Full Image' and thats all there is to it.

. if you want to upload a video you'll need to host it on youtube or other Social media platform and post the video 'Share' link in your message

I wanted to upload the video and show it to you guys, I will upload it on YouTube and share it. Thanks

Those clamps are old and soft. Likely been bent and bent again. My advice, bend em correct. They do close almost fully and they do work. Just don’t over tighten them. Like a lead battery clamp overtightning will just make it worse. You can improve the shape of the tin shroud as well

you may have over-tightened and damaged the clamp clip its easily done if you are a bit 'heavy -handed'
Make sure that the carbs are inserted fully in the rubber stubs and make sure that the metal clip band is aligned evenly all the way around each rubber stub inlet and as near to the edge adjacent to the carbs as the metal bracket on the stubs allowed.

If the clip bands are not correctly positioned ( ie too close to the cylinders ) then they will have a tendency to 'sqeeze' the carbs out of the stubbs

I think the clamp is too big for that, because I can still rotate it freely
