Antique Tags: What's The Law In Your State?

Here in NY I checked on them years ago and as I recall they charged a lot extra and you could only drive toi and from car shows .
Their may have been more but I don't recall.

Historic plates can be got from DMV and put on vehicles 25 years and older for exhibition or collector. NO daily driver.
Vintage plates are plates issued to you or were bought. These plates have to be the same year as the vehicle. They can be put on vehicles the same as historic plates.
Not worth the extra just to drive it to shows.

In British Columbia, Any vehicle, car or bike over 25 years old qualifies for collector plates. You have to send in pictures with your application. They require that the bike not be modified from original. In other words ,no customizing. Although I have replaced the rototiller handlebars on mine with something a little better. I don’t think the bureaucrats that look at the pictures care. You also must have another vehicle registered as your principle driver. You are not supposed to use your collector vehicle for work or getting to work. Pleasure use only. The insurance for your antique, “pleasure use only” vehicle/bike is about 1/4 of regular insurance. If you get rid of your other vehicle you lose the collector status on your bike and your insurance goes up, because they assume your antique is now your principle vehicle. All in all, it is a pretty reasonable way of doing it. My insurance is dirt cheap and I consider all of my bike riding to be pleasure use anyway( unless you are riding through a deluge). There are a lot of retired people where I live. You see a lot vehicles, even pretty ordinary vehicles going around with collector plates on them.

Wulfbyte,
That's interesting. It's assumed here in North Carolina that you will only occasionally drive your antique vehicle but the only restrictions actually written into law are to prohibit commercial use of vehicles while displaying antique tags. As a matter of fact the state let me keep my regular tag and registration card so I can run either one I wish.

The occasional pleasure driving clause is what makes it work.
Pleasure riding means for enjoyment, and occasional could mean a few times a year or a few times a week.
Its probably best not to ask for clarification at the DMV. I'm sure the answer will just depend the opinion of the person asked.
