What have you done to your XS today?

Looking good so far Machine! For the front tire i have a matching set of Shinko 270s on my bike. The front is a fat 4.00 and I find it matches really good. Problem is a fender rubs and i had to oblong the mounting holes to raise up.

Superjet, thanks. This rear is a E 270 5.00 It just barely fits and is quite tall.
Gonna keep it
;)

Thanks Gary for the input. I did end up replacing coil, wires, caps and plugs. Also I cleaned out the tank, used the Kreem 3 part product to etch and seal. New petcock with positive "OFF" position, New fuel lines routed appropriately.... Yes I park over carpet because there's a seal or two leaking after rides. But HEY!!!!! I am happy to report that I AM riding! So here's a pic of my 1980 XS in all it's patina and glory.
Question, I'd like to run a more modest seat, is there an alternative or do I need to ebay a second pan and start whittling? I am fond of the European styling of the XS more than I am of the US version.
Loving this bike!

PS I bought some tire paint for that whitewall. Geeeesh it just doesn't look right

Hmmm, Nice looking Special. I too have wondered if the 78/79 seat fits the later models ?

No. Forget about it. The 78/79 seat does not fit to replace the later lift off seat, unless you're good at pounding square pegs into round holes.

Go to Texavina.com. The have the late XS650 pan in their repertoire. Their website says they'll make whatever you want.

motorcycleseatsdirect.com has one as well.

If you work dawn to dusk sometimes you just have to take your hobby to work where there is a lighted bench.
The virgin XS tool kit “JIS” screwdriver freed up every screw fine on these two sets of 79 BS38’s jetted all stock. Score ! Again on the extra parts box when you take over a dead XS project
 :D
they say sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.. used parts sourcing you have to be both

Finally got to the Auto Hobby Shop and washed the cam, bearings and head and valve cover. Mostly did it to get the dust and grindings from the rocker arms. Hopefully I'll get some assembling time tonight.

I may get flamed! I was down at the local feed store. A friend said " Hey, why don't you buy Johns old CB750?" He's says it's been sitting in his barn and he's asking a grand for it.
I thought, damn that's high but I'd go look. Out I goes and I can't get anybody to the door so I leaves. That was last week. Yesterday I find myself in the feed store and my buddy says, "you go look at the Honda?" (Yeah, couldn't get anybody to the door) He says " John says it runs but one carb needs cleaned or something...says the paint is good." I'm thinking what kind of CB has been sitting in a barn and it RUNS? Back out I go cause I got to see. John is out ranching but I catch his wife. I tell her I came to look at the bike John has for sale. She says, "That old Honda?" "It's in the barn, help yourself." "He should be home soon, but I don't know." I look in the direction she is pointing and I can see the a faring with a head light in it. Sure enough, here is a CB750 K, 1978, black with gold trim covered in dirt and dust. I didn't want to mess with another mans bike so I just kinda looked at this and that. I opened the gas tank and it smelled like Tin-mans arm pit. ( Dorothy told me) . Clutch feels good. Front brake breaks loose with very little pressure and works thereafter. It looks like it is in pretty good shape under the dirt. I check the tale-tale places and the bike has never been dropped. (I think I have a little drool at the corner of my mouth) Last time it's been registered was 2014? if he's kept it registered since 1978 it may have 100K miles on it? SOHC, I like that and only two valves per cylinder instead of 8. I like that. I turn key and the instrument lights came on. Damn. No way would I try to start it in it's shape (but some people will do more harm than good just to show you it will run) I didn't get the mileage cause I didn't want to run my finger over the odom with all the dirt on it. I wish now I had but..... Left my cell number with his wife. I've known John for 30 years. Now I wait for him to call. Hate to spend a grand but I also hate to let this one get away. I'm TOTALLY happy with my Yama but...under that dirt I could see factory stickers! What do Ya'll think?

SOHC CB750.........yeah, if I had the scratch and the opportunity I'd grab it. Appears stock and unmolested.

I would have to pull the trigger on that. I'd wash and bag that fairing and luggage rack. Wash and service the bike. Fix what is broken. RIDE IT! If you don't rescue it, it will get cut up for cafe racer.

It will end up like this!

Hahaha, I don't think I'd steam it. I like to hand clean to see what I have. I'm worried about the chain guides being so old. I should have looked at the mileage. It may be very high mileage. But the guy has not called me back yet. May have to track him down but he's not one that needs money.
