I just read an article about a global "knock off" bearing problem, substandard bearings coming in name brand packaging. Does anyone know who sells and can be trusted "not knock off" camshaft and and other internal bearings. Just me wondering.

From what I have heard, a lot of the knock-off stuff is in the aerospace field where unit prices are very high (and thus, profits are also high).

As for who to trust...I’d use recognized, long-time suppliers and beware deals that are “awesome”.

Not any more Pete. From the day a part's born, a certification called an 8130 is attached to it. Even a lowly rivet comes with a cert. That cert is added to the aircraft's logbook.
In the US, a mechanic caught installing a part that's not certified will loose his license for life :yikes: and is subject to legal jeopardy. :yikes::yikes:
I'm not saying it doesn't happen anymore, but the problem is infinitesimally small.

Much of the substandard knock-off junk I've come across has either barely visible surface aberrations (rough, burnt grind marks, sandy appearance, ...etc), and/or no or improper heat treatment.

I wonder if the "file test" on the race would reveal anything...?

What the article shows is crappy looking cages on taper bearings and a pile of SKF looking packaged bearings being destroyed. https://www.machinedesign.com/motion-control/dangers-fake-bearings kinda scares me, I really don't enjoy bad part induced redoes and right now the XS2 is the project sooo I'm sourcing bearings and I just need confidence in product.

That's a good article, John.
Shows a good pic of a counterfeit, with its questionable surface irregularities...

That counterfeit bearing would probably work ok on some low-demand application, like a wheelbarrow. But, I wouldn't want it in any of my stuff...
Exactly what I'm thinking, I've seen wheel bearing get noisy after 6 months and I don't want the new to me XS project going south any time in the foreseeable future.

All Balls wheel bearings have served me well. AFAIK Yamaha still sells OE Koyo camshaft bearings. Main bearings are unique to the 650 twin because races need holes for pins and oiling, and neither Yamaha nor Koyo offers them. The only option I know of is repop mains from Mike's XS. Haven't seen any negative comments on those.
