I want to remove the large shiny cap from an XV750 clutch cover to replace that missing from an XV1000. Does anyone know how to remove this large shiny cap? I could just swap the whole cover except my cover has better chrome work than the one in the photo.

Thank you for any help, it must be possible but probably not ideally meant to happen.

...need to see full pic of bike to give you answer...

Here is the XV with the nice chrome but missing cap over the clutch region:

On the engine clutch cover to the left of the cap with Yamaha stamped on it is the space where the large cap has fallen out and been lost by the PO. Here is a closeup:

On the inside of the outer edge where the the red arrow is pointing is a groove suggesting the cap is fitted with an O ring and pressed into place (Note: All that shiny chrome behind the arrow would normally be hidden behind the cap if fitted). So maybe I just need to lever the cap off the spare and then press it firmly into the clutch cover on the bike. What I do not want to do is mess the replacement up trying to lever it out so just wonder if anyone has done this removal before???

Thank you.

Recent photo up some hills in South Wales with Treorchy and Rhondda Valley in the background. Note the recently fitted windshield I cut from UV treated 3mm polycarbonate to replace the original perspex which was higher and gave too much turbulence hammering on my helmet.

Viragos generally considered kinda "ugly duckling" bikes on this side of the pond but had one for many years and trouble-free miles until last Fall. Very rugged motor, used in 1100 Road Stars after
Viragos out of production. Transplanted XS650 headlight, Vance & Hines exhaust, 1985 XV750 spoke wheels, Mustang seat, Mapam Restyling forward controls, analog voltmeter, up one size on the main jets. Always thought it needed a 6th gear.

Paul FYI - there is a Virago Owners Group Forum on Delphi Forums that operates very much like this one does for 650 owners. I learned a lot from it during the years that I had my Virago.

Thank you aldo5468. I will check out the forum. At present I am considering fitting a grease zerk on the inside of the spare cover and try to pop the cap out with a grease gun. Should be fun???

I found no references to removing the caps so fitted a zerk on the inside and pumped it full of grease. Unfortunately it would not budge and the grease started to leak. Got brutal and made a series of cuts with a hacksaw in the sidecover around the cap and hit each segment out with a hammer This freed up the cap without any damage. The reason the cap would not come out is it was locked in place with a big circlip the thickness of coat hanger wire. I felt guilty trashing the side cover but then the chrome was shot and I had not further use for it.
