Farscape, Star Trek, Star Wars... you name it, if it's about space, I'm a fan. On Dec. 13th, Amazon will release season 4 of The Expanse. 14 days and counting.... If you haven't watched the first 3 seasons, you have 14 days to crawl out from under that rock and get caught up. ;)
Oh... and lets just keep this discussion about space based science fiction. If you're a fan of zombies... go start your own discussion. :p

2001 A Space Odyssey

In my mind, the one that started it all, still stands tall. Weird story, with a crazy “ what the hell was that? “ ending. But absolutely beautiful to watch. For being made in 1968! The special effects still hold up, the forward thinking vision of future technology. This movie had it it all, as well as one of the scariest villains of all time, the all seeing , self aware Hal the computer.

“Open the pod bay doors Hal.”
“I’m afraid I can’t do that Dave.”

Alexa...turn down the lights.
Siri...where’s the nearest Walmart?
2020 the year Alexa became self aware........:yikes:

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Even older, released in 1951! I remember seeing this movie like it was yesterday. Such a great movie.

“ Gort, klatuu barada Nikkto ! “

If you know that line, then you’re an old fart!

Some of my favorite movies were from novels I'd read. I read Dune in the early seventies. Loved the first movie. Enders Game was another book I loved... and the movie.

I knew I liked you guys for some reason...

SO glad they brought out Season 4. There was a rumor going around that they'd cancelled The Expanse. Best SciFi out there, so much of it is just Star Dreck in a new suit.

Ender's Game...Obscure? Required Reading amongst the cognoscenti! Next thing you'll be calling RAH a hack!:p

While we're on the subject of reading (sort of...) I highly recommend Kurt Schlichter's mini-series on the ultimate outcome of Political Correctness and Socialism. People's Republic, Indian Country, Wildfire and Collapse. Not SciFi per se, but excellent reads and IMHO prophetic enough to be scary. Best read in that order, but not critically so.

I must of saw that movie 20 times Blew me away
It helped my buddy's sister worked at the theatre free movies free popcorn
this was when they built a new theatre with the wider screen and the 70mm movie film ?

2001? Yes, Landmark movie, fer shure. Big screen in 1968, but Star Trek's first, original pilot episode ("The Cage") was made in 1964 (ya know, the one with Capt. Pike?), and the series ran from 1966 to 1968. Both came and went before we landed on the moon, and all the computer graphics in 2001 were animated on acetate cells like a cartoon, because the technology didn't exist!
The Day the Earth Stood Still? Oh, yeah! Gort, baringa! It may have been the first time the aliens were the good guys, sort of. They were just looking out for themselves because we were too primitive and violent, but we had the bomb!!! Ooops, sorry, no politics........
Next time, we'll talk about Science Fiction vs. Science Fact (or at least Science Maybe)
P.S. I'm diggin' this, Jim. Great Pandora's box you've opened!

The Day The Earth Stood Still, (The original, not that Keanu Reeves Crap), It Came From Outer Space, Earth v Flying Saucers, War of the Worlds etc are all on my TV recorder. Just give me Hugh Marlowe and Ken Toby any day.

I actually walked out on 2001 after about 15 min. Things just moved too slow. Never seen it. I did however just love Spaceballs. I even liked Cowboys & Alien`s. Go Figure.:shrug:
Almost forgot Tripping the Rift and Mystery Science Theater.

The pilot for Lost in Space compared to the series. What a contrast. The pilot had a believable story and decent special effects.

The Martian, I expected too much from that movie. The end was a rush and get it over job, very disappointing.

Gravity, I was so glued to watching that movie.

Star Trek Voyager, my favorite of all time, even binge watched the whole thing on Netflix.

I did enjoy Farscape, till the last shows.

I'm the opposite. Didn't care for Gravity, loved The Martian. Only Star Trek I'm NOT a fan of is DS9.

I know it was already mentioned but DUNE has allways been on the top of my sci fi list, I went to see it in the theater with my father from the south of france and he was still not quite Americanized yet at that point, and even as a small child he always treated me like an adult and he asked me as we sat on the mall bench after the movie watching pretty girls walk by, and I still remember this he said ,"I don't understand the movie can you explain it to me" lol, Ive watched it with many people thru my life and tried to show them the comparisons the movie was making politcaly (can I say that here lol) even now very few people notice the comparisons, fun fact of trivia:
sytem of a down the band there first album cover is a "screen shot from the main charecters dream... whjen they said in his dream "the sleeper must awaken" the hand at the end of his fever dream is the cover of the album ,the first album self titled system of a down, I belive the reference may have been to the sleeping masses of americans, but hey its just a movie and just a band right;)
