Can this motor be saved....

Well I think the tribe has spoken pretty clear and with the above votes of confidence I will go ahead and split the cases! Thank you all so far for the advice, I will keep you posted on my progress. I was able to find out this evening that the bike only has 7400 miles on it so here’s to hoping that once in the bottom end things look good.

I am about to tear open my engine so I may have a few gaskets, seals, and cam chain I don’t end up using. PM me if you need some parts I have a couple other things too you can see in the classified ads.

im about to start a build from the ground up, and I will post lots of pics, you can ride the coat tails of my engine build and see step by step whats involved in splitting the case and what to inspect, I will probably start that build on the 15 or 20th of this month,

The results are in....I got the cases split and this is what I found. Please let me know if you see anything of great concern, thank you for your help.

If that brown is rust that isn't a good thing, the gears'd probably survive but you are going to really have to look at the bearing races.

I have two spare sets of gears, whatever you decide to replace let me know... I have all the bearings and shift forks too, basically I have two complete transmitions in the spares box

Gary,
FWIW all of the bearings seem to spin very freely with no binding. Do I need to remove the transmission in order to inspect the races?
