Got the clutch side cover off for polishing. I assume I should replace the kickstart shaft seal, if so, how to remove and what seal should I purchase?

Also, I have read many posts stating my lower 4 cover bolts should have crush washers, infortunately only two bolts had washers, they were the two perimeter bolts closest to the oil filter cover?, thus possibly not even the 4 lowest bolts. Best source those crush washers?
Any other seals I should deal with while the cover is off?

Thanks as always.

Yamaha is your best bet for the seal, lowest price and insured quality. I did some seal price comparing a while back and was quite surprised to find Yamaha better priced on all of them .....

The price has gone up 60 cents or so since I made this chart, but that still beats Mike's outrageous $10+ by far.

Yamaha also has the little copper washers and although they're about $2 each, you only need a couple, unless ..... did you happen to find some on your oil filter cover screws? Many times two of the washers get moved there but they're not called for in that spot. Here's a diagram showing where they should go .....

Thanks Twins, any " best method" to removimg the kickstarter shaft seal?
Currently it didnt leak but I assume its original thus while I'm down there...

Note: Yamaha often reduces the list price on items they no longer produce.
Why - they do not want others taking up production of the part even though they have no
intention to make it again. Kind of like a badger pissing on a kill after its had his fill so no
other will benefit from it. Yamaha goes to extra ordinary lengths to keep others out
of its business. In Japan they will pull a franchise if they find a non Yamaha part in a dealers stock.
Mikes inventory is priced to get the maximum number of shekels out of everything.
Yamaha long ago discontinued all xs650 parts unless the same part is used on another
late model bike. Like they say in the trade - without Taiwan you do not get parts.
Yamaha also destroys all tooling after about 10 years as they simply do not have the
storage space. Those that have the attitude that they will only use OEM parts will simply
find none.

I don't have any special tips for this seal, just use your normal seal replacement techniques. Protect the edge of the case you're prying against to get the seal out, be careful not to gouge the seal bore, etc. Thankfully, with the cover off, this one is easy to access.

when levering the old seal out, use a chunk of wood between the seal and case. on re-install, lube the seal with the same oil u use in the motor. then a socket the appropriate size to push the new one in. light taps with a hammer to socket to seal will get it done.
