Hey all, first bike, post, and thread on this forum.
As the title suggests I recently picked up a 1982 Heritage Special which, as far as I can tell, is an XS650J
The title lists it as a 1982 Yamaha, with a 15 digit vin, making all vin decoders useless as they require 17 digits. I have open ears to all who are willing to offer up their experiences to help me restore this bike to running order, and then onto better cosmetic things.
The bike is missing parts, Haynes manual on the way to assist in identifying all missing/present components. The bike has hacked wiring, my assumption is the old man that owned it before I bought it bypassed all safety locks in order to make the bike function, I have since removed the offending harness and purchased a ready-made harness from MikesXS. Wiring is something I strive to avoid messing with.
When the harness gets here, I plan on buying a new battery and plugging everything in to see what works. My multimeter shows that the ignition switch is functional, as is the ignition system. A quick hack job allowed me to sent power directly to the coil via a 12v battery, and with the aid of starter fluid and the kick starter, the bike turned over for a few cycles before the fluid was used up.
The gas tank isn't connected, nor is damn near anything else.
I look forward to sharing my progress in making this bike work, pictures have been included.

Welcome to the party, Ash (?) ! You're off to a good start if you got it for $100.00, with a title! And you got a "putta-putta-putta" out of it? Bonus! So far, so good. You have a manual on its way? 'nother bonus. Before you go tearing everything apart, do a compression check. This will give you a pretty fair idea of the "health" of your motor. Read everything in the "Tech" section. That'll keep you busy for a while, and the more you know, the more you know. Ya know? Between the manual, and the "Tech" you'll be able to answer a lot of your own questions. But feel free to ask anything. This is the greatest forum the world has ever known, with smart people who are happy to help you. Take lots of pictures as you go, post 'em here, and update us often (we're nosy buggers! ). Mechanical inclination, the willingness to try new things, and the patience to see it through will have you terrorizing the neighborhood in no time! :yikes: Best of luck, and Merry Christmas!

A $100 XS650 with a clean title is a good buy even if it doesn't run at all. Most XS lovers don't care much for the Specials but I've grown very fond of mine over the 15 years that I've owned it.

You'll almost certainly want to get rid of the stock handlebar and replace it with a Street tracker bar or a replica of the CB 750 Honda bar as those provide excellent control over the bike and are quite comfortable. A Bar Snake in the handlebar and proper tuning will get rid of excess vibration in the handlebars if you feel you have too much. These bikes are actually pretty smooth considering they are not counterbalanced.

And while there are lots of faster and better handling motorcycles on the road today these bikes are just plain fun.

Welcome to the forum! Can’t go wrong for the price! I would also suggest that you check the serial number on the motor, I suspect that the motor is from a much earlier bike. Note the valve tappet cover that has the built in decompression release,

These only appeared on ‘72 and ‘73 models, it would also make your engine have different internal components than an ‘82 model. Not a huge problem but it’s necessary that you know what you’re ordering parts for.

This is why I posted up here, let me check the numbers rn

Am I going MAD, :yikes: or does your bike look like it has an early-style decompression lever (front left) cover? That doesn't jive with the year you have. Sure, it's gonna need a few parts here & there, but most of what it needs are the kind of "take-offs" you can find in the "Marketplace/Classifieds" section (in another part of the forum). A little "this & that", some fresh paint, and you'll have a great runner!

(Edit: I didn't know what a decompression lever was so a quick google showed me that the cover colds the cable that would be connected to the left handlebar, the man bought a few of these bikes perhaps he swapped this cover over?) The engine number and frame number match, which matches the title, sans an added "001CA" and an "A" prefix
Not sure about too much here.

If it has sight glass on the right side cover, that a sign of 1980 and up. Also carbs, should have VM34's. Hope you have BS38's. These were before 1980. I personally like these (38s) for easier tuning. There's a lot of variations in the 38's as you will see. If you need any parts, I have some listed now that should work on this bike. You'll find a lot of mis match parts on these old machines. Fortunate to have this forum where the guys can tell you everything about every part. Fact.

It does have a sight glass on the right side

Yeah, it's a later motor then. 1980 or newer. That valve cover was a replacement. Getting rid of those handlebars will make a big riding difference also.
I suppose I'll get to it when it drives, first hurdle is installing the harness and battery, next is fixing whatever breaks after It runs for a few seconds

Looks like you have BS34 carbs. Note the pull knob for the choke (red circle). Green oval is wire harness coming from left cam cover. Means you have an aftermarket ignition... Pamco, Boyer, Mikes, et al. 80 an up had nothing under there. It used the TCI iggy system.

You also have an aftermarket PMA charging system.

I dont have a wire coming from the right cam cover, it's possible, I'm sure the fuse "box" is aftermarket too. I do belive that this has an electric starter on it as well, though all of the handlebar controls are in a separate box. I've no idea what's original or not. I'd love to start the bike by turning the key, and giving it a kick. No buttons or extra junk on the bars.
