Hi Mario! Welcome to the party! Have no fear! You won't be a "newbie" for long if you stick around. If you would, please send us some more pictures of your Xs (we're nosy! :wink2: ), and help will come out of the woodwork! This is the greatest site for everything Xs, with a lot of the most knowing people in the world (not me, I'm still learning!). Best of luck, and cheers! Again, welcome to the party!

5V5 03**** is an 83 and 5V5 04**** is an 84.................by chance the 83 and 84 have the year as the 03 and 04 in their vin no's

When the rest of the world stopped getting production models of the XS650 in 82, Canada had the 83-84 Heritage specials and sold some as an 85, (I think you will find the 83/84/85 are the same bike), and other countries got these Canadian models by request. I bought my 83 5V5 03**** in New Zealand and it was imported by the dealership brand new.

These bike differed to the US Heritage Specials as in they have Mag wheels instead of the 64 front and 48 rear spoke wheels, they, (5V5's), have the rare Drum brake rear mag which was only available on the 81 model

650skull what are your thoughts on why would the neck vin differ from the engine vin as shown 5V5004...kinda strange cause my 83 has same identical number on the neck and as on engine 5V5-030... I just find that odd. JC

Both the engine and stem stampings have the 5V5. That identifies the model. Both end in 040177, the serial number. The engine has the - (dash) in it, the frame doesn't. I just looked at my 3 frames and all 3 have the - stamped in the number. All 3 are 9 digit VIN's. Sometime in the 80's VIN's were standardized as 17 digit codes. Looks to me like sometime in the past, yours was re-stamped to conform to the 17 digit format. Afaik, none came from the factory as 17 digit VIN's. Looks like you have a numbers matching (040177) 83-84

On my Canadian 83SK the vin and production details are on a white sticker attached to the neck of the frame. it has the 17 digit no on it. The vin no stamped on the frame next to it, (in conjunction with a Vin Plate/Sticker), is the normal 9 digits. Over here the Oceania models, (finished production in 81), have a pot-riveted Vin Plate, not a sticker.

If the sticker is missing from the frames neck stem, then it is a good bet the 17 digits have been stamped there for registration purposes.

For models 77 and later, over here, if the vin plate is missing the frame can't be registered.............

Hi guys, new guy here looking for some help! I picked up this 650 Special a few days ago and the guy said it was a 76, the date on the neck sticker say 10/76 which would have me believe it's a 77, no? But looking up on the VIN chart posted in the files says it's a 78. The Special didn't come out until 78 right? The vin on the neck and sticker match and appear to be original. What year is this thing? TIA!
