SPIN-ON OIL FILTER CONVERSION

Will it make your XS engine last forever?

This replaces the filter screen in the side cover with a modern, disposable filter, available in chrome and black. It projects about 2", giving a burly, modified look. Everyone will know you love your XS enough to give it a supply of clean oil. Side cover must be removed and 2 holes drilled and 2 holes filled with J-B Weld. Kit includes: Adapter and gasket, hardware, and 620 Loctite.

4 filters available: black or chrome, with (K&N) or without safety wire---$7.49 to $16.50

Replacement filters: Fram PH6017 K&N KN303 EMGO M82230 Vesrah VSF4005

HON 15410-MM9-013 KAW 16097-1063 YAM 3FV13440-00

Oil filter installation instructions

Spin-on Kit #MCEN13-44100...........$94.95

Emgo black filter #MCS86-4164 ..... $7.49

Emgo chrome filter #MCS86-4168 .... $8.85

K&N black filter #MCS55-6004 ..... $14.95

K&N chrome filter #MCS55-6030 ..... $16.50

I was on 650Central today looking for replacement chain and sprockets for my bike and came across this item. Has anyone done this.? Is it worth doing?

I think it looks a bit awkward with a large filter poking out like that. On my XS I have the Heiden/ MikesXs kit using the small Honda filter. They come in 2 versions, with or without cooling fins, the one without looks loads better IMHO. Heiden also has a kit with an adapter, and a remote , large filter, which is mounted in front of the crankcase. Both these alternatives require no modifications to the clutch cover.

I bought the Smedspeed conversion, which replaces the sump tray with one machined to take a spin-on filter. So it fits below the motor, well tucked away:

Read all about it my build thread http://www.xs650.com/posts/598604/

Smedspeed can be found here http://www.smedspeed.co.uk

(Hope the link works)

Fascinating info and alternatives fellas..Thanks!. I would definitely like to replace the achilles heel of oil filtration on this bike...I am almost certain i already manaaged to rip the filter..havent looked yet but i was revving the engine when it was on choke...Bike has not been ridden more than 300 miles since i took posession of it..so with any luck there isnt anything bad in there....

Of note is where in the lubrication system these filters go. The filters on the side cover are on the pressure side of the oil pump and replace the stock filter. The sump filter replaces the strainer on the suction side of the oil pump. I would worry about cavitation of the pump with a filter on the suction side.

Personally, I've had no issues with the stock system, other than the bottom filter getting holes in it occasionally. I change the oil often, like every 1000 to 1500 miles and check the filters each time. I've taken a couple steps to hopefully improve things. Following a tip from 2M, I now put a paper sleeve on the side filter .....

The sleeves were made from an "open" filter from Walmart. It only cost about $5 and I got 18 or 20 sleeves out of it .....

Besides patching torn original sump filters with JB Weld, I've now added a bolt-on sheet metal "guard" to hopefully protect the weak end of the filter .....

Nice writeup, Bill. I've used the 650 Central spin-on kit for around 8 years with good results. Also fabricated a bolt-on guard for the sump filter.

Cool, I sell the occasional filter guard but usually I just tell folks how to make their own as the actual material cost is only about one dollar and after the 30 miles of driving and time spent making the part I'm really only breaking even at the $25 I charge for them. Mine are made from galvanized nailer plates from Lowes or Home Depot. But occasionally someone will tell me they just don't have even the most basic of metal cutting tools and I'll sell one.

I've had both my spin on and filter guard for years with no problems.

I think my next change will be a deeper sump to go with the oil cooler I'm making from a power steering cooler. Maybe return to cooled oil to the sump somehow. Maybe a separate pump?

Another change I made. Because my XS in an '83 the sidestand mount does not allow the sump filter to be changed without first removing the engine from the frame. I was not going to settle for that so I removed the factory sidestand and cut the mount off the frame. Then I found a sidestand from what I think was an old YZ 250, reinforced the sidestand, made a new mount and attached it to the frame.

After about 10 years my mount began to bend but I caught it in time and repaired it better than before. It isn't a work of art but it works and I like the fact that not only can I now access my sump filter, but the bike leans over a little more when on the stand and isn't as likely to get blown over or sink.

I was hoping to hear from Megan muddergirl12 to see if she is still making/selling her adapter
I like the design and the ease of installation

Bill, can you elaborate on this? We have an 83 and certainly didn't have to remove the engine to swap the sump filter.

I too tried to get an adapter plate from Muddergirl, she did get back to me but it took long enough that I decided to purchase one thru XS650Shop.de before she did. Very happy with the XS650Shop product, but they don't make it obvious what that filter is. As I didn't want to be stuck paying for shipping from Germany for a filter, I did a bit of searching. I ultimately determined it to be for a 2018 Smart ForTwo 1.0 Liter NA car.

Hi Bill,
WTF, eh? I'm with delegem. Sump filter on my '84 comes off OK although it's a bit of a fiddle to deal with the side stand cut off hardware.
