It's gettin there

Yes, I suppose once you rivet it in, a couple tack welds around the edges would be good insurance against it spinning.

Here is today's pointer...

When taking electrical completely apart, paint the inside of the headlight bucket white, it makes re-wiring easier as the wire colors are easier to identify against the white background, and the white provides a higher level of ambient light due to its reflective properties.

Been a while since I posted....did you know some water bottle threads line up with oil dip stick threads, thus it's a funnel that doesnt need to be held while adding oil.

Looking good. The threads of, at least some, oil containers line up with the oil dip stick threads as well. This one in particular:

Interesting Peterg, I have some of this oil at home in the DCW - but could you please explain what you mean when you refer to the 'threads lining up'?

EDIT: Ahhhhh - just read the post above....got it!

COOL!

Working on bike, installing side and centerstand.
Took off the rubber bumper that attaches to the frame for the side stand, as I needed it for a center stand stop I needed.
But now with the side stand attached, it seems like there is now way that 1/2" bumper would ever serve its purpose, my center stand is way off a nice and tucked look I was hoping for.
It hits the frame up near the pivot point which is what stops its rotation, as I would need a bumper at least an inch tall for it stop the stand when not in use....any ideas, does it look correct?
Is the large gap between stand pipes due to the MAC pipes?

I just added a zoomed in pic of the bike when I got it, the up close pic shows the large gap and the stand doesn't come close to hitting the original intended pad

I think the tangs on your stands are bent. The sidestand one for sure is. You'll need to "work" it back up some so it will contact the rubber bumper. I think the centerstand tang is bent up a bit too much. Bend it down (or forward when in the down position) and the stand will nestle up better and tighter to the muffler. As far as a centerstand stop goes, I just use heater hose on the tang .....

That side stand tang looks like the rare 74-75 "long tang"? Yes when I fit custom exhaust, the oxy acetylene comes out for stand tang "reconfiguring" to fit close to the muffler and up out of the way as much as possible. I'm not beyond making the centerstand tang tube a bit more "oval" at the muffler to get it further from the road. Usually an L bracket bolted to and hanging down from the passenger peg/exhaust mount does my center stand stop duty. On Madness the center stand is a shop item. I take it off when I'm not using it.

Thanks guys, I think I can "persuade" the side stand into a more manageable position.
The center stand will likely require heat, and I have nothing more than a small propane torch purchased from any hardware store, so that may stay as is for a while.

5T, what is the second mounting threaded hole for behind the hole used to secure the header pipe?

Take a look at some stock exhaust parts diagrams. Besides the tab on the headpipe that attached to the front hole, there was a combination clamp/hanger bracket that fit over the muffler to headpipe connection. It attached to the frame using that 2nd hole.

https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcycle/1977/xs650d/exhaust-xs650d-e-e006501-f

Most aftermarket headpipes are longer so the muffler fits on farther back. That 2nd hole goes unused now.

Side stand tang, propane, no problem.
Even the centerstand tang will get hot enough to be easily "persuaded" with a hammer.

Actually a plastic CocaCola bottle has the correct thread for the XS650.
Makes a perfect funnel.

Ita gettin there, really.
Put in fork oil today, added cupped washers to the top rubbers, installed XS750 ally risers after their polish treatment, new clutch, throttle cables, polished up original tach and speedo cables, side stand back up in shape, side cases on, new drive chain, Im sure Im forgetting a few things as well I assume I also cant remeber everything left to do!
