Hurricane resurrection

Got parts coming from everywhere.
On Sunday placed a order over the internet with a place in the UK. Gaskets, filters, clutch plate and some other needed parts. This arrived at noon today. Everything ordered in package. One of the items I ordered was 2 binnacles.
Question of the day without using google to help what is a binnacle and what/where is it used on a bike? Until I started resurrecting this bike I never knew a bike could have a binnacle. I knew boats had barnacles. But bike binnacles who would have thought. My old ones are bad. A bad binnacle is not a good thing. I have a hunch Fred knows what they are.

Also ordered a bit of functional bling. Just hope I'm never riding it when someone can read who made it.

Hi GLJ,
a ship's binnacle is a column mounted on it's bridge where the helmsman can see it that holds the ship's magnetic compass.
Note that "swinging the ship" is not a dance move, it's rotating the ship thru a 360 to check that it's compass always points to magnetic North.
I would guess that on a bike they'd call the tach and speedo mounting cups "binnacles" so they could up their price..

You are correct. That is what the Triumph/BSA parts book call them. I thought you would figure it out. If you knew that the rotating plate on a arbor press was a quatrefoil (witch I didn't). I figured you if anybody would know what a binnacle was you would.

Next question. I have found out my oil pump is held together with 3BA screws. It doesn't want to come out. I have to make a tool to use the threads in the rear plate to push it out. I had to order 3BA all thread from the UK to make the tool. What were the Brits thinking coming along with BA threads?

You made me do it.

Interesting read on BA screws. Still some applications for them.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Association_screw_threads

Hi GLJ,
back 'ome we mostly used the even numbered (2BA,4BA, 6BA) threads, seldom the odd numbered ones.
Sometimes it's easier to go non-standard:-
I replaced my Heritage Special's broken nasty plastic handlebar mounted choke lever with a chromed metal one off a Royal Enfield.
Which had it's 2BA clamp bolts missing and it's 2BA tapped holes partially stripped out.
Option 1) import two 2BA screws from the UK at vast expense and hope the lever's tapped holes were still good enough to hold.
Option 2) re-tap the 2BA holes 10-32UNF (~0.005" bigger diameter & very similar pitch) & use screws I already had.

Thought this might make you feel good about your resurrection.....

Thanks
Mailman also posted where Mecham just sold one for $26,400. I've kept track of what they've been selling for for the last 10 years or so. The money they bring made it a easy decision to do what I'm doing. It's a nice feeling to know that if should ever chose to part with it it should bring more than what I have in it.

Yeah , I know. I’ve only had one bike that I managed to break even on, my old Bonneville.
Every other old bike I fixed up was a loss, financially speaking! ;)

Hi Mailman,
BTDT!
I could pay off a big chunk of my mortgage for the current price of a 1930's KSS Velocette
Alas that I sold 5 of them for a pittance back in the 1950s.
Oh! If I only had a time machine attachment for my telephone.

Made a little more progress. Most parts arrived on time. Minor set back on the cylinders.
Binnacles arrived from the UK in 4 days, amazing. Here's the old ones with there gauges. And yes the glass is broke on the speedo.

New ones mounted with new hardware. They looked great.

Something needed done to the tach and speedo. Hmm. I asked myself what would Mailman do? I knew the answer.
Wasn't going to happen. I got lucky. Found a rebuilt set at a speedo rebuild shop that the owner said he personally removed from a Hurricane. No way to know if that's true or not but they look the same. One very small difference which may have been a production run difference by Smith. They look good.

On to other stuff. Needed to get the oil pump out. Ordered some 3BA all thread from the Obsolete All Thread Company in the UK. A tap from the US version of Obsolete Tap Company. This stuff plus some parts I made and a special pusher tool was born. It worked.

Took pump apart and cleaned and inspected. All looked good. Interesting note. Unlike our 650s it's a dry sump system. There's actually 2 pumps in there. Both sets of gears looked fine.
Cleaned up the right side engine covers. Not going to say they are polished. They do look 1000% better and put them back on with new stainless hardware. Also new stainless engine case bolts and custom made stainless washers. New stainless bolts and washers on left engine cases also.

Now the little engine setback. New valves and guides arrived. Dropped them off at the machine shop late Friday afternoon. Asked Cory when he thought the cylinder would be done. He said he was going to do it Saturday morning after he got done rebuilding a snowmobile crank. Told him no problem. If he gets it done great, if not Monday would be fine. Superbowl weekend and all, I had other plans. Anyway no call Saturday morning, no worries. I figured the crank didn't go well or something more important came up. He called Monday morning with bad news. Something went wrong when he bored one of the holes. It came out .002 over the target size he wanted. Which meant after honing it would be too big. Going to have to get a new liner. He was not sure what went wrong. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He does good work, he prides himself on things being done right. He's been doing this stuff for 30+ years. To make it right by me it was going to need a new liner bored to my piston. He told me he could not find a new liner anywhere. So a company he deals with is going to make him a custom one. He has to remove it, measure it up and send them the specs. I checked and found one company that lists them, problem is they are out of stock. Not sure how long this is going to take. All this is going to cost me is time. His boo-boo, his nickel. Don't think I'm going to get my " friends and family discount" on this tho.
Not the end of the world. Since I have some extra time I've been doing some cleaning.

Nikasil cylinder plating?
I don't think that's a option. My BMer has that. From what I understand there are no oversize pistons for it. If you manage to wear out the cylinder it has to be replaced. I remember reading if you are replacing the rings not to hone the cylinder. Just assemble and go. From what I read the Nikasil coating is harder than a wedding night prick.

Well Greg, first of all, those gauges look terrific! It’s too bad about cylinder liner, there always seems to be some hiccups when working on old and especially rare machines like yours. I think you’re doing a terrific job on this bike and I’m really enjoying following along.

yup, I concur. Nikasil is much too hard for regular rings. I think that when the Bavarian Manure Wagon company introduced it, they had a run of rings that were too soft and wore out very rapidly. They took quite a hit doing warranty engine jobs on a bunch of lawyers bimmers that year.

Not a lot happening on the old girl. Waiting to get the cylinder back. Cory said a week to get the sleeve made. I figured that was optimistic. He will get it done as soon as he can. I had planned on taking a break from working on it as soon as the cylinder was back on and the motor was back in the frame. Have other bikes that need some attention. Spring is around the corner. -9 this morning, it feels like a big corner. I did get the inner primary back on and cleaned up the outer cover. Not show quality but a lot better than it was. It's just sitting there, primary chain and sprockets not back on yet.

Picked up cylinder and head from machine shop today. Should get cylinder painted this weekend and then next week get cylinder on engine and then engine back in frame. Should be interesting getting pistons and cylinder back on. It's a bit more difficult than our 650s. The rods are 120 apart from each other.
