Hello,
I'm David and the recent acquirer of a 82 XS650 Heritage with 16k miles on it. I say "acquirer" as I bought it of my daughters boyfriend (definatley overpaid of for it) as he was having issues with it and didn't have the time, enthusiasm space or money to get it running again!

Here's what I know - It last ran around 3 months ago! It has a broken spark plug cap and the battery is as dead as a doe doe. I took out both spark plugs and while they were a little dirty, not disasterous. I clean them up and I grounded both plugs at the same time and could not get a spak from either. The gas in the tank smells ok!! There is no electrical activity and so need to check and charge the battery. But....how does this seat come off!! I have a 77' suzuki gt500, 72' Triumph t120rv and a Buell blast P3 for my other hobbies.

I should probably buy a manual for this bike, but would like to remove the seat and look at the battery even though I know this is not a requirement for sparking at the plugs. I have attached a photo of a seat lever, but the darn seat still doesnt want to move..

dead battery on a 650 = no spark. Not sure how your seat comes off as your bike is 10 years newer than mine.

Edit: If you have the stock charging system.

Yeah, as GLJ says, unless it's an aftermarket PMA charging system, you need a good battery to get spark.
The seat lever goes aft to release the seat. If it's a little stiff, spray some WD40 up in that area and work it back and forth a dozen times or so. Then, put some downward pressure on the back of the seat and pull the lever as far aft as you can... like you mean it. ;) Then lift the back of the seat. Keep trying, it'll eventually work loose.
 
They can be hard to release. Push down back of seat til it re-latches. Now pull up on LH rear of seat while pulling latch lever back.
 
Thanks fro the replies and welcomes. Ooops, I seriously did not know that the battery would need power for ignition. I finally got the seat off!! Its an awkward little bugger. Looks like some has made a half ass job of bodging the wires to the fuse box which has 4 fuses in it. Is the fusebox still available for purchase and does anyone know a part number? I will spend sometime tomorrow going over the bike. Thanks, David
 
Mikes sells a replacement. But do a searh here. Many replacement fuse box ideas.

Many of us consider the factory manuals to be the best. I do have the aftermarket ones too but I rarely even look in them. Many of us also like to have the real book in our hands as opposed to a download. If you watch eBay, you can find nice used copies for $20 or less usually.
 
My update for this 82 Heritage model :
I left the front seized brake caliper completely immersed in brake fluid over night and now the piston moves with some decent resistance. New caliper repair kit on its way with disc pads.
I bought a new 14ah battery for the bike.
I have found a place which sells the old type glass fuse holder connectos which is crimped to the wire. Hopefully on their way to me!
Both air filters look like a rat has been having lunch at my expense in the air intakes! 2 new filter on their way to me.

I need to find 2 x air box intake seals p/n 5T8-14452-00-00 and it looks pretty hard to find one for this model and so any suggestions for a supplier please.
