Cutting the cable! TV cable that is

^. Jim Varney.
Hey! I met Bruce Dern in Madison In. when he was in town filming "Madison".I was doing some cable disconnects Downtown and kept seeing this guy that was walk-jogging with a towel over his head. I just figured it was another eccentric in town. I wound up parked while searching an address to disconnect when I noticed a presence standing by my open window. In my periphery I saw it was the crazy guy. He asked it I had some work to do for the corner house. Without looking at him I explained I was looking for a disconnect.
"Are you sure you don't have some work for that house?" He asked.
I replied "No, I have to disconnect this one" as I finally looked at him.
There he was, still jogging in place next to my window with the towel over his head. "Bruce Dern!" I said as I realized who it was. A big smile came across his face with the recognition.
Nice guy.
I went back to the shop for lunch and told some of the other fellas. " Cowboy" Jim who was from Texas wondered if I asked Bruce Dern why he shot John Wayne in the movie "The Cowboys."

I've been seeing "Youtube TV" advertised, which might be another way to get streamed cable channels, don't know. However Youtube content itself is about a million times better and less psychologically disabling that cable content.

I just hooked up Roku, and I'm not seeing anything free. For instance, Bewitched is $1.99 per episode. I did try to watch a news segment that would only play for a few seconds at a time. I agreed to let Roku collect from my checking/paypal at their whim, that bothers me. Not sure if I'm going to tell my wife that I got wrapped up in this or not.

So far I can't discern what is free, afraid to make any selections because of that, and I haven't gotten anything to play/stream yet.

Download the CW and CW seed apps as well as Crackle and tubi tv. They’re all free.

Resurrecting an old thread...

When I signed up for Google Fiber it was a little over a hundred bucks for internet and the standard TV package. It's crept up over time. This month they raised it from $165 to $180. This is getting ridiculous. It breaks down to $70 for the internet part and $110 for the TV side. And as I said, that's just the standard package... no HBO or Showtime extras. Not sure what others are paying, but this needs fixin'

My $49 Roku stick showed up today. Other than having to move the entertainment center by myself to get to the power strip, setup was straight forward... hell, pretty much plug and play. That's a one time payout. I ordered up Youtube TV at $49 mo. Between Youtube and the Roku channels, the wife and I probably have twice as many channels to choose from than what Fiber offered.

I canceled the TV side of Fiber. That's $110 off that bill... down to $70 mo. Add in the $49 for Youtube TV and I'm at $119 mo. A $61 mo savings. I'm tickled pink

Now I'm on the hunt for a fast, reliable internet service for under 70 bucks.

As an aside... I can hit the mic. button on the Roku remote and tell it what channel or show I want to watch. How cool is that? :smoke:

Haha! Very nice, well done! Are you thinking of adding a TV antennae to pick up local channels? You can get amazingly good reception with an affordable antennae.

No need. Went to the settings in Youtube TV, typed in my zip code and viola... all my local stations added to the guide.

We "cut the cord" by starting with an over-the-air antennae. At Wally-World, that set me back about $60.00 (a one-shot deal) for a long-range directional model. That gives us all our local channels, and then some. After that, we changed internet providers, and got high-speed internet and phone (voice over IP) for about $65.00/month. Free long-distance calling in the U.S. and Canada, and 100 Mbps internet. We have one smart TV, one ChromeCast (so far), and use HULU, and CBS All-Access (so far) and watch whatever we want, whenever we want to watch it. So far, so good. :twocents:

We use the Roku sticks too. We only pay for the internet, which sucks royally in my rural area. But that and a $12 monthly Netflix subscription puts us at about $55 a month. If you have Amazon Prime account then you also get Free Amazon Tv. Thousands of free movies and tv shows. There are still some you have to pay for but you can filter them out by just looking at the PRIME channels. That was a huge added bonus since we just get the Prime account for the free shipping on everything. Prime membership is about a $100 annually.

Since I’m in a 3rd world country (Mississippi), my internet comes via satellite. I’m mostly using the poor signal that comes to my phone. So far, we have not succumbed to a satellite subscription to TV. There doesn’t seem to be much content to enrich my life and 40% is commercials. Even the news has become mostly propaganda. I’d rather hang with you guys.

Sunday morning FM radio music show. Kink fm101.9 . Portland is close enough that that little Powered TV antenna is in the view. Even through the soaking rain storm free TV is all I have.
No Internet. No cable. Free ~

I made a diy DB4 for camping. It works great most everywhere we go.
Get an 18x24 corrugated plastic panel and wipe with alcohol. Or cardboard, or paper, or plastic, or plywood for a backing.
Buy copper tape, the type used for alarms with conductive adhesive.
Find a dimentioned image of a DB4 online and use a Sharpie marker to draw the antenna on the backing.
Stick the tape on the DB4 drawing.
Use little nuts, bolts and washers to connect a balum to the antenna and a coaxial cable to your TV.

I did not use a reflector on the back. This will add extra gain if needed.

I just bought a Amazon firestick and am trying U-TubeTV free trial now. 70 channels + locals. All the channels I want, not the 240 that Dish charges me for. It comes with a cloud DVR, which I never had since the VCR days. I'm going to sign up for Pluto TV movie app. soon. I am lucky as for the internet service. My town has been installing 1 gig fiber optic cable now and I signed up about 2 years ago...$50/mo. I had to buy a WIFI extender for my bedroom to get a better signal. All is working great and I am going to CANCEL Dish tomorrow. $100/month total.:D

I don't know if I posted to this thread before or not, and I'm too lazy to look.

I would drop DirecTV in a skinny minute if it weren't for SWMBO. She'd have a conniption fit AND I'd have to actually talk to her instead of just listening to her bitch at the TV.:p

I have Netflix via my daughter's account and Amazon Prime on my own dime. My DSL internet is fast enough that I can stream without latency and it's $40 a month so that's not bad. Plenty of shows to watch on those two channels and I can shut the door to the Man Cave, slip my Sennheiser wireless earphones on, get comfy in the Lazy Bastard and watch whatever the hell I want with no interference.

Life is good...

Forgot about my Amazon Prime. We got it for the free shipping. In this household, it pays for itself in a few months.... so I'm calling that free tv stuff.
I'll check it out on the Roku. Maybe I can get an antenna for local and ditch the Youtube TV too.

This is more fun than the what kind of oil should I use thread:laughing:
Our cable ,internet and phone bill used to be $150:wtf::yikes:
ditched the land line (using the cell phone) saved $20
built a 2 fugly antennae's cables tv is gone saved $ 60
When I bought my Vizeo it was a smart Tv but about a year ago they changed something (so I wasn't able to watch Youtube videos) so I bought a basic Roku box to make my tv smart again $30
I get 16 stations with the fugly antennae's which include all the PBS stations 3 locals and one channel with old movies on it (antennae tv chanel?) and a few others and we are 60-70 miles from the Twin Cities
My brother and I share Netflix so for us it's $7 per month per person
I generally watch PBS and don't miss the Discovery channel (Pawn stars and whatever :hellno:)
There was nothing to watch on the learning or history channels any more so I don't miss cable
If I'm bored I can watch a ton of youtube videos (type in Yamah 650) And my wife can live with what we now have (where did my old wife go?)
