I've embarked on another anti-shackwhacky project - wanna see?

Built like a...

Really like your farm DE. (I am very late to this thread, but fun getting caught up). Funny how many like-minded people enjoy the same things... XS's, VW's, and Scale Models, etc...

I too was into trains growing up and got to play with my grandfather's HO scale for years (His entire basement was one giant railroad that would circle the furnace and stairway). I was enthralled... then, when my kids were very little I decided I wanted to build a set as well. Unfortunately, I had to resort to N scale for lack of room--but it was just as fun building it up & developing the scenery. I still have it, with it's yet to be completed tunnel and mountain top... you've inspired me to get it down and see if I can finish it off. :)

Down here, windmills and cattle tanks are quite common.

Up there?

Now that you mention it, I don't think I've ever seen a windmill here in Maine. I'll have to pay more attention.

We had one on the farm but it wasn't being used by the time I was old enough to help with chores. We had a frost-proof hydrant in the barn. Unfortunately, the stock tank itself was NOT frost proof or heated, so a fair bit of time was spent chopping the ice out so the cattle could drink.

Yet another reason I hate cowz...

Hi 2Many,
you can still see them further up there (and a thousand miles west) in rural Saskatchewan.
The windmills are almost all parked since the 1960's Rural Electrification Program and the cattle tanks
are mostly re-purposed cast iron bathtubs from bathroom renovations.
You can also see re-purposed cast iron bathtubs in the front yards of Toronto's Italian area houses.
Cemented tap end down into plinths, painted blue and with a statue of the Virgin Mary inside.

Anvil on a stump. Foot powered grinding wheel.
motor powered wringer washer on the back porch.
Buzz saw for firewood.
(one armed farmer :()

...maybe some old rusted-out cars/trucks behind the barn? "Stuff" under a "dreaded" blue tarp?... You gotta add the kind of "junk" everybody has in their yards. A brush/burn pile? Burn barrel? Dirt pile(s)?...

Burn barrel is out behind the house. Small junk pile started behind the shop, adding as I find stuff. Rusty pickup/car is a good idea, I'll find something. Brush pile works as well, just no place to put it until I close on that 40 next door. ;)

I don't know about "downeast", but around these parts, a lot of people have what looks like an "outhouse with windows"(?) out by the road. It's a shelter for the kids to sit in, keeping them out of the elements, while they're waiting for the bus in the morning. It might be a local thing though...
We had it easy when I was a kid there were about four of us who caught the bus on the side road and had the use of neighbors two car garage to wait in, not heated or any thing but at least we were dry and could see and hear bus coming down the hill so had plenty of time to run down the driveway.

Well, the bank finally came through with that loan for Old Man Schmidt's place. Needs a LOT of improvements, pretty barren at the moment. Mostly all that hard pink clay right now, but with lots of bullsh....uh...."compost" and some time I think it'll grow a decent crop.

Look in’ good DE!

It’s funny how there is the green-to-pink border. I made me think of @DanielBlack talking about moving to the “green” part of the map (from Arizona to Missouri).
