What have you done to your XS today?

Decided to polish the aluminum side covers and rocker covers while I'm sitting around waiting for engine parts to come in. felt like I did pretty alright for my first ever attempt at polishing something. just used a bench grinder, Mother's Mag and Aluminium polish, a cheap cloth wheel from harbor freight, and some carb cleaner and paper towels to clean everything up once I was done. Also figured I'd shine up my old silver ring and that came out cleaner than I've ever seen it, even better than the day I bought it.

Looks good enough for me

Alright boys I did it
The '82 starts up first kick (almost) every time now. Runs hella rich, is probably a very combustible machine.
I put it in first, let off and....
I rode it around my yard for a bit.
Now that its 'alive' dare I give her a name?
No lights though, apparently I need SOME relays for that

Took the rear half of the transmission apart, had to use a little persuasion to get the sprocket nut off, but it came off without any damage. My HR rep sent me home from work at 8AM this morning because she thought I might have corona virus lol. I actually just ate way too many flaming hot Cheetos while watching tv last night and was seriously regretting it this morning. gave me the whole day to work on the engine. Also was able to give soda blasting a try to get the black paint off the XS-J case Gary Hoos sent me. (http://www.hoosracing.com) he's an absolute saint. I posted a thread in the garage about it with some pictures.

Also yes, I am rebuilding the engine in a literally tent in my backyard because I ran out of room in my garage. Plus, makes it way easier to find ball bearings that decide "they've always wanted to see Italy and there's no time like the present".

 you've got my attention!

Well yesterday I was out doing a few things around the yard. Went by the bikes and thought I ought to top up the batteries and see If any want to run. The 83 XS650 was dead The 75 had enough to crank the engine a bit, The Harley almost started.
I put the charger on the 83 and by the time it was charged up it was a bit late in the day, cooled off a bit to much to ride. So today I went out and tried the 83. Put petcock on reserve, waited a bit for carbs to fill, Pulled the choke and hit the button and after about three turns of the engine it fired right up.
Went over to the Harley and It fired right up too.
Didn't try the 75, maybe tomorrow.
I tried to get the 83 down off the center stand and couldn't. I tip the bike sideways enough to put 2x6 's under the rear tire and got the center stand up but it still wouldn't move. Turns out the front caliper is sticking a bit. I think the sleeve the caliper slides on is the problem. A few taps with a rubber mallet freed it up. At least till I used the front brake again. I'll have to pull the caliper so I can pull the sleeve, polish it up and lube it it should work fine then. Then maybe I can ride it to my foot Docs appointment tomorrow afternoon.

Well technically it had a roof over its head. Just not 4 walls...I made up for it though because now the bike gets the entire garage

I got everyone in the garage! The XS is behind the skidoo and got my Roadstar on the other side. 16’x22’ and all fits even the Jeep. Was quite the puzzle was dooable lol

so I finally got the bike back together and decided to see if it starts... it started right away on the first try... let it run for a minute and then realized I forgot to put oil back in it. so I added oil and let it run for 5 min with no problems... I think the bike gods were on my side last night

Wow! I found it really difficult to remove it from the engine when it was on the bench.:cussing: Now, I try to remember to loosen it while on the frame with the chain on.

I messed up putting the crankcase cover. I couldn’t get it to sit flush towards the back and I assumed i could seat it but slowly tightening the bolts little by little. The collar pin isn’t the issue. Any ideas? Also I View attachment 161551 View attachment 161552 need a new cover since i cracked it :’(
No ideas, but I think that GLJ is correct about the kick starter. I will say, all/most parts will easily seat together, sometimes with a little shaking or light tapping, (never force or pound on it). I say all/most, except the head.

Finally back to work 0n the XS650. Still not able to get the front brake to work. Opened up the master cylinder, what a mess. Piston is corroded, spring is rusty but the seals look OK except the external seal, tore it taking it out. Been in there 40 years. Bore is clean, somehow. I would like to put a kit in it but the one that looks right is at MikesXS and I have been disappointed with parts from there. It is the short piston with the cup not attached to the piston. Soaking the parts in Evapo Rust, that should help some. Any suggestions about the kit??

First Start Surprise!
This one came to me pre-bobbed and I am thinning the herd so I had to get it running.
Did a quick carb clean and a minimal (hot) wire and it fired and idled!
Walked to the other side and see it dumping oil. Better check those fasteners now.

Okie, I used Mike's master cylinder kit and it is still working fine since 2014! There is a tiny hole/port that was clogged on mine. That gave me some headaches, but a young kid at the local bike shop spotted it. Hey, my 42 year old brake fluid was like old jello.
I turns out that 2 years later, I discovered that only one piston in the caliper was moving. The brakes still worked fine, but I bought a new one from Mike's anyway. It also has been working fine since 2016 or about 25K miles.

I will check the holes again, I suspect that is most of the problem.
How do I know which kit will work?? $17.00 to ship a master cylinder kit is not right. I found one at George Fix for about $23.00 shipped. A K&L should be OK. I knew there was something I did not like about Mikes.
