Sorry 5T don't understand what you mean. The attachment for the lift arms are bolted to the motor in 2 places. The base is bolted to the lift with 2 3/8s bolts. 3/8s bolts are more than enough for 160 lbs.

I was talking about where it connects to the engine. I "hang" the motor from a connection with 2 sides that the bolt can pass through .....

But like you said, you can mod it easy enough. It took some modding on mine before it was really good.

Top Dead Center Stop. Have to be careful when using this on the XS 650 you don't hit a valve. Made this using an old spark plug. It was a lot more work hollowing it out that I thought it would be.

Travis, nice tools, bit late for you i know but the spark plug TDC one is so easy to do, just grind off the uppermost crimped part of the steel section(where you have the weld) and the entire guts just drops out, 20 sec's on the grindng wheel

I'd say your side mount tabs are just fine Greg. Weight distribution is about 2/1 forward biased. Call the motor 150lbs. Your fwd mount holds 100 and the rear 50lbs. Well within the capacity of a single tab. Majority of the weight is below he mounts, so very little rolling or twisting moment. I made my mounts the same way. Works fine. I've got an extra scissor jack. I might mod mine to work like yours.

yeah O H and S i s my first priority, loose clothing and drinking beer whilst using it is mandatory !!! actually the belt is pretty slack and not spinning all that quick, you could probably grab the belt and stop it and the unfixed drill press would come crashing down.

What color gray are those cases painted? I saw a moto guzzie engine painted in cast iron gray and it just stood out.
 
So, I've been busy with the welder again, lol. You may have seen the fancy rotating engine stand I made so I could flip one of these motors over and access the bottom end. Well, I got to thinking, what if I get in there and there's something wrong? What if I need to source replacement parts from another motor? Yep, I needed a second upside down stand. I didn't need another fancy rotating job on it's own cart, just a simple bench top or garage/shop floor stand. The second question that occurred to me is how do you get one of these 150 pound hulks upside down without busting a nut? Here's what I came up with, a "flip" stand. You start by attaching the "flipper" to the top rear and front motor mounts of an engine already out and on one of the little angle iron stands .....

Then, getting it upside down is as easy as one .....

It works great and isn't hard to "flip" at all.

is there a reason for the lower stand is pink? just thinking, always looking behind, but this tool is a blast for sure, 5 Star self-made tool!

Please don't get me wrong, your ideas are fantastic, but where you take the time doing all that? I assume you are not i n a full employment anymore, not married, live in your workshop and somebody is cooking and cleaning for you??? LOL, just jealous , want the same

For the raised portion, are those 2x3's stacked up? Cant tell how many pieces are stacked up due to light / too bright.

Nevermind, I see now they are 2x4's laying side by side, not stacked.

Did you already paint the tunnel and dont want overspray, or is the tunnel another color?

This is badass! Is there a benefit to the stand rather than just hanging it and painting it? I know when parts get hung there's usually evidence of the hanger with whatever hole you use, but it's worked this far for me! Lol
 
To all you ex-military out there. When I was in the Navy, we made all kinds of s&!t to help fix the quality low bid equipment our lovely government bought. I made a 5 gallon paint shaker from an old washing machine. A parts washer from an old sink, discarded/unclaimed socks, and a pump from a chemical tank. A sonic cleaner from a palm sander. And a whole host of other things to help fix things. Because when you're 3,000 miles from land, You can't go to the local hardware store.
