Help. Getting back on the road.

It's hard to say which type of bulb is used in your speedo and tach. 1980 was right around the time Yamaha started changing over from the twist-lock BA9S bulbs to the wedge style T10. You'll just have to take one out and see. Easiest to check would be the ones in the center console. You can just remove the cover with a couple of screws. There will probably be 5 bulbs in the instruments - 2 in each one for illumination and a 3rd in the tach for the high beam indicator.

Just did ab 400 miles going up to the country. The clutch slips in 5th for sure I think I'm ready for new springs. I adjusted the worm screw. I'm gonna check it again but I'm sure I'm about a quarter loose of contact.
I'm gonna experiment with retading the timing a little to.

If anyone has a link to, or pics of and or can explain how the front blinker goes on, I've been struggling with this. My bike spontaneously fell over on the right side while I was in the country, it was pitch dark I missed a turn n when I got off to get phone out and look at GPS it must have been on a slight slope and the right blinker broke off. I really want to know how to put a front blinker on. Plus they are kind of pitched back and I want to fix that as well. Any help on this is much appreciated.

Blinker: remove the 2 phillips screws which hold the headlight with chrome ring on, and pull off the headlight, disconnecting the lamp wiring pigtail. Study how the left blinker stem is connected. Take it apart, if necessary. You probably bent something on the right. The blinker stem is replaceable, new or used.

Pictures of your broken blinker would help.

Thanks, here go a few pics. Im going to get in the head lamp area....the lense and housing are fine. There is a threaded rod in the stem. I feel like the rod is too short. I posted the pics as thumbnails.

Hi joe,
that threaded sleeve looks too short because it's busted off.
When you open the headlight shell you'll find the other half inside, along with the ground connection & the retaining nut.
Screw the busted stub out of the flasher stem, screw in a replacement sleeve and re-assemble.

Many times, the headlight ears get bent where the signals mount. Then the signals angle back. To straighten them, I remove the headlight bucket and measure across it at the signal holes in the sides. Then I stick a long length of all-thread though the ears with washers and double nutted at each end. I trap each ear between two nuts and washers. I adjust the distance between the double nuts on each end to match the headlight bucket width. Tightening the double nuts against each other on each end will square up and straighten the ears.

Yes definitely, I'm going to work on getting it straight, I ordered the broke thread piece, it's really gonna bother me if they're not straight.

Thanks for all the help. Did an oil change took out side filter sump plate off, cleaned both repaired sump filter. The oil stays clean looking for a while.
Just a note for anyone with idle trouble, in my ignorance, when I first got the bike, I ordered and put on non resistor plug caps, I thought it would give me stronger spark, turns out it has resistor for more than just radio interface. The resistor actually lets it build a strong spark. I put the caps that came on the bike, there threaded end idk if that's oem. The bike idles so much better and runs better. My mom commented today the bike sounds quieter. With my next order I'm gonna get new resistor plug caps.

Do some plugs come with resistor in the plug, are those little screw on ends a resistor? I believe it's just a cap to go into a socket type plug wire end rather than the plug wire end that goes on the threads of a plug.

What are thoughts on stp gas treatment, anything in there that can hurt anything?

I want to get a welder soon, is a flux core tig the way to go, or should I go for the gas shield tig, or stick weld. I am leaning towards stick or combo stick flux tig machine.

The little aluminum spark plug caps are simply that.
For the average "want a welder in the shop" guy 120V MIG with a cylinder is a good all around choice.

What is the typical thickens of frame, frame tubes, etc,? What thickens would a welder have to handle to weld a swingarm, move shock mounts add bungs, what would be the welder capability to weld anything on a car or motorcycle frame?
Don't worry tho I have no intention on welding anything structural until I am confident. I'm not getting a welder soon but I am in a trade with access to an amazing welding class and welders. I am interested in the whole craft and the more I research the more I realise there is allot to learn.

Little on a bike thicker than 1/8" You can easily weld thicker when needed by layering beads.

Shit, I just dropped a little disk into my gas tank, I was changing the cap gasket and under the piece I took off to get the gasket off there was a little disc, metal, I feel like it's not magnetic, anyone ever deal with this?
I don't think it will hurt the gas flow or cap, I would like to get it sorted cause this is my only transportation right now, I need to use it b4 I empty remove and flip the tank, if that's the only way.

Edit-I got it out with one of those extended grabby tools.

I've been riding, when I 1st got her I went up on piolet and main jet and got the adjustable needle. I'm almost sure she's to rich on pilot and maybe all to rich.
When it's idling like at a light or quick store stop, she stalls when I go to take off. It's like too much gas. It's been so long since I've been in the carbs.

My problem is I'm struggling getting the carbs out the frame. I know I've had them out in the past. I want to see what is the needle and jets. So..any tips on removing the carbs.
