Have you ever run across MackieBass of Cambridge Pinstriping? I don't know exactly where he is - but he is in the UK...

I doubt he is as good as Jim but his YouTube channel shows some really nice paint jobs (if you can get past the headbanger music - not my thang) and I think he's quite reasonable in price because he always seems to have a steady stream of restoration projects.

Pete

I haven’t Pete no, but I definitely will check him out! Thank you for the suggestion.

I’ve had this local guy recommended to me

Mackie is in Peterborough - you can call 07722 064 831

I don't know him but Google does.

Miss November's paint job was done by Neil Weatherly based in Charlesfield in the Scottish Borders - I can PM you his mobile number in interested?

There will doubtless be good painters more local to you. Or with the encouragement and tuition from this thread, you could give it a go yourself?

Is Mackie who painted your tank Raymondo? Your tank’s stunning!

Did you check the link I posted? He’s very local and has been recommended by Rick of Smedspeed.

Locality’s not a deciding issue as much as workmanship.

I’d love to paint my own but I lack the ‘dust-free environment’. I do plan on at least doing the prep/body-filler stages myself. Jim’s thread is giving me the confidence to attempt this.

Daniel, Mackie is the Cambridge Pinstriping bloke mentioned by Pete - he's in Peterborough. Mine was painted by Neil in Charlesfield, just down the road from here. Thank you for the compliments, the paint looks even better in reality, the metallic finish with transparent paint over silver base seems to change with the light and even as you move around it.

He did the XS650 and has since done a CB500 tank for my brother-in-law. I don't know how he is fixed for work just now - might be a bit of a hiatus with everything that is happening? Would you like his number?

Tried to look at the Killerpaint link but I don't have a Facebook account.

Jim, hope you don't mind us borrowing your painting thread . . .

Cheers, Raymond

I had a look at Mackey’s website and saw his business was called Cambridgeshire Pinstriping and I quickly put two & two together.

I’ll pm you a view of Killerpaints photos if you don’t mind?

Sorry for hijacking your awesome thread Jim!

I picked up my XS750 tank today, it’s been stripped by blasting with aluminium in oxide. The finish is dull and a little textured.

So I can identify any dents & dings should I wet sand a little first to give it a slight shine before using one of the lamps suggested earlier in this thread?

Daniel.

Yes, putting a little shine back on it would make it easier to see the dings. Nothing fancy, just go over it with some 320 or 400 to bring a little luster back. Have a good look with the light source and if you see what you thinks a ding, give that area a little extra shine and look again. Good luck with it.

What Jim said, If you use a hard rubber sanding block with that 320 to 400 paper it will leave each dent so you can see it. With a good bright light and an old windex bottle of water, two drops of Dawn, you can wet sand little portions of the tank at a time and use an old towel to wipe as you go. You'll see the dents and small dings. I use the same method with fast dry primer. Primer is left in the dings.

.....goood things comin' soon......
... as if he knew huh?
1 light and 2 medium coats of base color and 2 full coats of clear... and here we are.

I'll let it dry for 3-5 days and then me -n- Pete will decide what kinda fancy dress we want to put on her. :D

That’s always been one of my favorite colors, a charcoal grey metallic. Mmmmm......:geek: Oh my! Pete’s gonna have shiny motorcycles, he’ll be buffing out fork legs and brake drums before you know it! Watch out Pete it’s a slippery slope.
