What have you done to your XS today?

Normal that the rear wheel spins. If you apply the rear brake that should cause the clutch to work like you are at a stop, clutch in.
Okay well that's a relief..So this is all normal? Am I not supposed to have play in the clutch?

Of course there should be some play in the clutch cable. I've found 1/8" at the lever to be maybe even a bit much. But these clutches along with other associated components such as the clutch actuator rod change in size with temperature changes.
So the clutch lever adjustment may seem to change on you as you ride away from a cold start up.

Next!
January's pic of a brat style I have on the bench getting it ready to sell so I can concentrate on my stock bike (s). Prob will use a drag bar instead of the window bars.
I have mounted the fender and the seat, coils and condenser, installed chain. Tomorrow hope to install left side cover, clean a set of carbs and hot wire the ignition to see if the motor is ok.

Well, once again, I didn’t work directly on my XS650s today but I did accomplish a good deal of Re-org in the DCW and made everything ready for the next phase of the Three Chicks Build.

Also, something came in the mail today that is really cool! Last week an advert came up on Kijiji (Cdn version of Craig’s List) for an original dealer brochure for a 1976 Yamaha XS650C. I almost fell over getting to my piggy bank and I made the chap an offer - and....

It is a brochure from Lucille’s birth year and it’s even a red version and Canadian to boot, with French and English. It is the perfect accompaniment to the beautiful 1976 XS650C Owner’s Manual that a fellow CVMG member in Ottawa sent me a couple of weeks ago.

happy happy.

Very nice Pete! That kind of stuff is fun!

Very nice advert, Pete !

Here is one of my own, from '77.

My riding buddy Gary has a '73 Norton Commando he bought new in the day, and unfortunatly he doesn't have a lot of respect for our Yamahas (don't tell him I said so ;)), however he did save this brochure he picked up in '77 at our local Yamaha/Triumph/Bultaco deal, Fred's Sport Motors (see the stamp on the back page) and he gave it to me last fall. Fred's is still in business, and I was in and out of the place in '77 cuz I owned a Triumph Bonneville.

As you can see, it has all of the models made that year.

Even just a short ride today the clearance for the RH exhaust valve has opened up to .008.
Take the adjuster out and run a file across it. If it's lost the hardened layer at the tip, the file will bite into it. If it's still hard, the file will skate across it without leaving a mark. Then do the same to the tips of the valves. If it's your lucky day, the adjusters lost their hardness.

I think I may finally have to get into the carbs for a look see. I’m tired of not being able to use my sidestand because of gas spilling out, or gas dumping all over my engine at startup when I turn on the choke. I’m also wondering if maybe the reason my top speed has decreased is because something in the carb is gummed up or misadjusted. It’s been almost two years since having them rebuilt, so I guess they had a good run without any sort of maintenance.
Are you running fuel filters?

That's what I felt like was normal! even with lack of experience on the bike, following all procedure and still getting the same outcome made me realize it's normal. My biker guru is going off of like 30+ years of Harley experience, and I'm me and say that these aren't the same as Harley's ( duh) but, on his behalf, he didn't spend time working on Japanese bikes. So now that I know it's "normal ish" I feel much better, because that means I did my clutch plate replacements and adjustments correctly.........correct? lol
