What have you done to your XS today?

I am not sure which version of TCI is on the 81, but I believe the early version (12-01 ) is entirely repairable. All of the components including the IC are replaceable. I have a 12-01 here to play with. The integrator waveforms on it and the signal flow were mostly what I expected, but the timing of the signals was different than what expected. This is likely a problem with the way I built the test jig. Need to think about this a bit more. I am not certain about the makeup of the second version TCI, but I believe it is close to the 12-01. The final version (12-03) is repairable except for the IC which Is a custom chip. None the less, if a person could figure out the timing, you could substitute something like an Arduino nano and use the inputs and outputs of any board.

I'm giving my 80 box a try. Symptoms are... good start and idle, Revved OK 'till about 2000-2200rpm. Then it would start popin' and sputterin' until about 3000-3300rpm... at which point it would smooth out and rev good to redline. Only happened after it warmed up for 10-15 min and when it did, the timing light goes whacko. My guess is that's the range where the chip transitions from retard to full advance. So I'm guessing the chips bad. The chips out and I put a 14 pin socket in it's place. Got 4 chips on a slow boat from china.... who knows when they'll arrive. If this works, I'll be about ten bucks into it.

First oil change after work today. Lubed the chain with the used oil, temp until I can get a can of chain lube. Chain was almost bone dry. Chain and rear sprocket look good, but I need to pull the chain, clean and soak it, and detail the rear wheel and sprocket.

Then went riding, of course. Last chance for a couple days, storm moving in, supposed to dump Saturday night and all day Sunday. Sigh...

Man I love wide open spaces! Do you live in Thermopolis? It’s funny, when I think of Wyoming , I think of the Grand Tetons. That’s all I’ve been to there.

I do indeed sir. My wife's family is from this area. She's 4th generation. Great granddad settled in Worland just north. Family's been here since, except for the few years dad farmed outside Torrington where I was born.
Lived in several states and Army posts over the years. Wouldn't trade all the collectible bikes on the planet for where I'm at now.

Tetons/Jackson area pretty, but beyond the means of most mere mortal Wyoming folk.

My folks lived in Pocatello Idaho for many years. I spent a lot of time there and ventured into Wyoming. Sure gets cold there in the winter , but so beautiful.

Late July back in '76, I went and quit the OKla. ANG and joined the USAF. Maybe transferred would be a better word. 3 weeks into a second round of Basic Training, took and passed the bypass test. Got my first assignment. Nellis AFB. Las Vegas Nv. Tough duty. Rode that pony for 19 yrs 8 months, 5 duty stations. Best decision I ever made. Besides riding motorcycles.

Back to our regular program...After playing with the carbs again I had to test them. So I put 130+ miles on her. Got her up to 75 mph (give or take) from Amado to the Valencia turn off in Tucson on I-19 N. No missing or hic-ups on this run. I didn't take any pics on this run to Arivoca.

...USAF...19 years 8 months...
Army 17y10m9d, on my last retirement letter. Spent 86-90 down your neck of the woods at Ft. HooWeGotcha (Huachuca) with 11th SIG. Got out for 9 years, re-up'd, went to Iraq with the WYARNG 06-07. Hard to say whether the best decision I ever made, but no denying those experiences have shaped me. Developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of the AZ desert, humping all over it, especially at night. Motorcycles

I just went out to the garage yesterday and did a few minor things like putting new foam on the air cleaner cages adjusted chain just simple stuff
And then I looked in the corner and saw another bike that needs some work

Its a Schwinn tricycle with pneumatic tires that the neighbor was tossing out
Grandsons going to love it
I just got to hang around long enough for him to get on the bigger bikes

and getting the bell on the trike to work was easier than tracking down the short to the xs horn (Done)

Let us know how it goes. Might want to check those tantalum capacitors as well. They are critical to the timing.

It has clubman bars on it! Well sorta. Good call getting it!

While on the topic of TCI repairs I stumbled across a company called Carmo Electronics from the Netherlands with a UK Office. They manufacture new ignition systems for many bikes. These at plug n plug systems so for the XS650SH you would purchase a new ignition box and just swap it with the old TCI. No rewiring is required and the new units have the same physical dimensions for mounting screws. They also offer a repair service for the old unit and give an option to upgrade if the repairs are going to be very expensive.

I have a bundle of cash that has been tucked away in a coat pocket for over a year to buy a new system for my Virago, but money is hard to part with these days.

Raining today. Cold. gona be down in the mid 30's next few nites. Where did spring go?
I managed to adjust my timing chain. Getting a tap, tap when she gets up to operating temp.
