Gas leak

Well try opening the float bowl drains and running some gas out into a cup. Sometimes you get lucky and flush out the junk.

Pretty easy to make a bigger mess than you fix rushing into a set of carbs.
Read the carb guide end to end at least twice before you start, it's in the tech section.
 
A full carb rebuild probably isn't needed, just clean out the offending float needle seat. You can do that by just dropping the float bowl, carbs still in place. Probably a good idea to have a look in the float bowls since the bike is new to you. That will tell you how far you need to go on the carbs. If the bowls are all dirty and gummed up inside then yes, you may need to go through them further.
 
Thanks. I did open up the the top of the carb that was leaking and ran it open with the residual fuel that was in it. It did clear up and ran fine out of both cylinders after reassembly. I’m going to switch to mikes Xs pre assembled. Any thoughts on that set up.
 
There's a couple threads on those carbs on this forum - some reviews not so good.

Not much wrong with the stock carbs. Just getting them cleaned right is a problem for some people.

Most usually need a good cleaning. If your bike has modified air intake or exhaust then some jetting is needed.
The carb guide has a section on that.
On Mike's carb kits, they sent out a few that worked for every dozen that didn't.
I run a set of Kawasaki Ninja EX500 carbs on my 750 kitted 75. These are easy to work on. A newer design that doesn't have near as much trouble with todays crappy fuel.
They won't work with the stock air boxes, so pods are needed. A straight foam pod like Uni Filter sells is the best.
