RonXS' Build Thread - The Soft Cafe

I'm up in Seattle... have a few parts laying around in case you need anything... although I'm curious on your local salvage yard... we haven't had a bike salvage yard up here for years. Miss it big time!!
Thanks for the offer... I'll keep this in mind.

Hello! Yes, What salvage yard has XS650 stuff up there pretty please? :lmao:
Thx, RT

Black Lake Auto Wrecking... Jeremy and Michael are very helpful - though I like the older guy's (maybe dad) prices better. :) Lots of XS parts inside in boxes.
I found them through craigslist under motorcycle parts. I just searched Seattle Craigslist and the ad is gone. They don't spend much effort advertising the parts. Jeremy said that they do have an Ebay store and do ship. Michael said that they are the last motorcycle wrecking yard in the state.

One of them is a motorcycle racer and races Buels and a MZ Scorpion. Never seen a MZ in person until yesterday. Interesting bike as it's powered by a Yamaha 660cc 5-valve single cylinder.

Due to the virus, their yard is open by appointment. But they appear to there daily. Best to call first before showing up.

Played around with body work...

Without the seat cowl, the seat will fit lower. I like this, but will need to custom make a micro-cowl (like in micro-bikini :))

Repaired the Headlight/Turn switch today.
The original turn signal switch was bad... And the switch I picked up from the salvage had a bad hi/low switch. So took those two lemons and made lemonade. Now have a working left handlebar pod. A great rainy day project.
Not sure how much you'll be getting into the cosmetics, but Diablo Cycles has a nice decal set for the switches. I used it on my SG. For less than 10 bucks, you can't beat it.

I just bought two sets of switch decals from Diablo. They seem to be quality made.

Yeah... I thought so too. I've also used the tank/sidecover decal set for a 78 too. I'll vouch for that also. I'd guess all there stuff is quality made.

OK before I get in too deep... I'm gonna come clean... now that were all friends here...

That tank isn't as nice as it looks... It photographs better from the left. Here's the reason why...
Now, I've owned that tank for 43 years. It was the original tank from my first bike, a 1977 Yamaha RD400 (affectionately named the Rocket). I can still vividly remember the event that resulted in me buying a replacement tank. Nice summer day about 5:30 PM, blue sky, fluffy clouds, birds singing... you get the picture. I've about 2,500 miles under my belt. I know all there is to riding a bike fast. We'll cocky me over cooks a corner and puts it into the ditch. Like someone reached out, grabbed me by the neck and smacked me down hard! Lucky me, youth and all, I didn't suffer more than a bit of road rash.

This is the result of the off road adventure... Nothing that can't be fixed... I don't know why I kept it, maybe just as a sobering reminder of what can happen... Yeah, I'll go with that.

Been there two lol.
A "perfect tank" just isn't necessary at this point. Think farther down the road? Thats how I roll anymore. Those first dents on a perfect tank are just too frustrating anyway. You have an awesome retro theme going there. Remember the small chin fairings in the 80's? Targa sold one. I put a FJ600 chin fairing and a custom bubble on the headlight for that era look back in the day on the 650 Seca.
I'm seeing that potential styling in your bike.

77 RD400 the perfect bike. Great handling with enough power without being scary fast. I rode mine from Reno to Houston wide open. Best bike ride ever.

Figured out the rear RD400 tank mount. I didn't want to modify the frame in case I decided to put the XS tank back on... options are good...

The front mounts with no modifications. The rear needs to be elevated about 1.5". The hard part will be the fuel tap. The petcock will interfere with the top of the engine. Only have about 1.25" inches between bottom of tank and the top acorn nut.

I've seen others use two inline fuel valves (on-off only no reserve) connected to the crossover tubes at the front of the RD tank. I haven't decided if I'm doing that yet.

Nicely done Ron. simple has an elegance to it. :D But.... you're gonna need to weld in a washer or some sort of reinforcement around the hole. That mount point is a well known point of vibration failures on these paint shakers.

Not sure I follow Jim... The metal bracket I made is 1/8" steel and much thicker and stronger than the tank metal. The bracket will be secured by a cup washer and captured rubber gasket/washer.
Or, do you mean the right/left mounts to the tank? I was going to use a 6mm bolt with nylock nut, but I could use rubber grommets with the steel insert spacers. That would put all three rear attachments in rubber. Thoughts?
