79 Special II RestoCustom "Doomy"

You might want to explore build your own brake line kits.
Thanks for the encouragement. I think I will simply cut to length the caliper ends of these lines because I betcha there is a local answer to crimp on new ends oriented just right too.
Over it for today. :)
Painting my mirrors and finished shaping the custom side covers..

Friday ended on a positive note with a the set of free bar end mirrors. Had to swap hardware through out & paint. Prefer round but hey, they'll be okay

Those look like Napoleon Barends. If they are, they're very good, about the best I've ever tried. Highly vibration resistant because of the rubber sleeve mounts in the bars.

Well, these are not Napoleons unfortunately. They seem to be a reasonable copy. I added the extra length of support. The Aluminum spacer and the additional rubber. Under the glass there was necessary strengthening needed as the original screws were too short to last..
Dents out and paint :)

Saturday phone calls to a couple motorcycle shops "essential" and open has not found an answer yet to crimping custom brake lines.
Told there is a marine "oil filter service" company who has custom fit local race bikes?
On the trail but taking advice if anybody has done this.

Still marching ahead slowly on Doomy.. Today at work I've modified the $10 Salvage yard Honda brake line banjo bolts to be more to my liking. I payed em $10 to be turned loose in the salvage yard on the hunt lol.. I shortened em up about .1" and drilled thru cross holes like most have, but old Hondas only have the one hole :umm:
Now the crimping of banjos doesn't look hard to do IF you have the tool & fittings kit. Still considering options here.
Now back to my seat a little more success. I did manage to heat its base up and bend it to fit at the rear fender shaping it correctly.. So I'm adapting original XS standard trim to fit the seat and that is also just a bit of a "creative" task as well. Bling!
Had to commit Sunday to other less pleasant events such as driving my pickup up to Olympia, the States Capital.
I'm gettin pissed. The "porch pirate" trend in my city neighborhood has been stepped up to full on community mailbox
Pillaging three times now as there are seemingly no consequences for the street criminals now.

I’m sorry to hear about your neighborhood thieves, have you personally had stuff stolen?

Just a bill so far lol out of the mailbox. I think you'd like our "mail carrier" she is awesome ! So On the ball with all tenants. And practically demanding the condo complex gets room locked access mail delivery.
Off the porch ? No I barely order a thing. Can't deal the anxiety it causes me lol. :lmao: But my gal, she is missing a few clothes/items now. HOA board is under pressure to attempt a resolve. Its all complicated right now. Extra vehicles parked all over. Barely get my truck parked in the complex somedays. My gal gets the driveway of course
;)

Before the merger, I sourced Goodridge lines from Z1. That went well. I haven’t looked them up since they all went to Tampa. Others here bought ready made lines successfully. Did you follow in footsteps, or strike out on your own?

Listened just a little then rolled the dice  It almost worked. Tho my spring ride hasn't happened yet, its pretty obvious I'm not hurrying much. I have real high hopes in this dual disc combo of Yamaha parts all put together to be both light and strong feeling.
I'm actually very particular of all the cable and line etc routing. Mistakes or just being sloppy isn't the way to go.
I'll get back on task soon.
Thx, -R

"Lucas Style" tail light installation.
There are (or were) a couple different copies of the old British Lucas tail lights and this one is an EMGO. It has been in a display case at a bike shop awhile looking at me for $45.
Cheaper online perhaps but, the lens has changed now online to look more "LED" like I guess so I gladly bought the "older looking" lens one here. I've been thru this before and there are some cool tricks to mount one of these up. They do not really fit the curvature of the XS rear fender well so I toss the given rubber pad and mount them even better on rubber risers. This time I'm lucky to find that the original 80'ish license plate rubber fits the two rear mount holes great so I'm shaving the rubber down to proper height.
The chinese bulb socket and wiring is crap compared to 70's era Japanese so I simply use the Yamaha socket guts which requires slight filing to fit the socket perfectly! Once that is changed the original bullet connectors all plug and fit like the original light.
The front support rubber is still "in process" lol but here is how this is going -

These are very sexy vintage era tail lights and if mounted well they do not vibrate as near as much as stock XS lights. Hope this helps somebody

Looks good!

Reminded me about a few years ago, when I saw this same light on a stock honda at a local bike show. It was the first time I'd seen one on a bike, and I thought it was stock... and said as much to the guy that pulled up on it. He told me it did look stock, but in fact he filed down the edges of the light to match the curve of the fender...and with the rubber pad it comes with, you couldn't tell. I didn't really understand it at the time, but now I get it. I suppose your approach is just as good, perhaps easier too. Either way, I think the Lucas style light is a great look!

..... except for all the wires hanging out the sides, lol. I think I'd be filing so I could use the original rubber pad and hide the wiring, but that's just me I guess.

seriously? Does anybody think I'm going to leave red & black wires visible?
No way ! A black ground will ground the socket and the fit will be even closer to the fender. All wires hidden.
I take a looong time on all these mods just so they are never half assed..

Indeed - and being a machinist, you may even have a few files sitting around and perhaps even a belt-sander....:bike:
