The traditional rephase has the right cylinder advanced 83° (or 90°). With the cam running at half speed of the crank, it'll show about 42° (or 45°) advanced when the left side is at TDC. Your pic shows that...

cool thanks 2Many. Well, I guess its down to ignition timing and/or carbs and/or air leaks somewhere. at least now I KNOW the cam is set right.
 
Well the winter here sucked, and I wasnt able to get out in the garage much. I was finally able to get back out there a couple days ago and got everything back together, and shockingly it fired right up. lol. I'm still having issues though. A new battery is on the list, altough I kinda screwed myself with that. Since I went with a small 8 cell Ballistic Lithium battery, I was able to mount it by laying it flat. If I want a traditional battery, or AGM I wont have the space to mount it in the same spot, and I realy dont want to make a new battery mount. But thats not the major issue.

The big problems are that I cant seem to get it to idle well. It'll pop and sputter then crap out, and usually a big cloud of vapor comes out of both carbs.

I have the PAMCO as retarded as I can get it, and that SEEMS to be OK.

So I really think I'm down to a fuel/air/carb issue. Next time I have time, I'll try to start it up and use some incense or something and see if the smoke gets drawn in anywhere around the carbs/carb boots. If thats all good, I'll have to pull the carbs, AGAIN, and thoroughly clean and inpect them, AGAIN.
 
Who did the cam?
That doesn't look right, I'll double check mine but the 12 oclock notch should split the cam lobes. At TDC of compression stroke I think the closing side of exhaust and the opening side of intake should be straight up and that notch should be centered between the 2 lobes of the cam.
From your pic, looks a few degrees off.

Cam was done by Hugh’s Handbuilt. Sent pics to him to double check, he said its all good.
 
Alright! I was able to do some fiddling around the other day and I managed to get it start easily and even managed to get tit ot idle pretty smoothly. Using the instructions form this post http://www.xs650.com/threads/revers...bs38-carburetor-pilot-circuit-idle-jet.42002/ I flushed out my carbs. I was pretty surprised by the little bits that came out. I didnt have exactly the same size tubing and whatnot, but I got as close as I could and it definitely helped.

I also played with the ignition timing and it seams like that major kickback i was getting is almost gone now too. Previously I was trying to retard the PAMCO as much as I could. I even removed the lower mounting screw to get a little more, eh hem, retard, out of it. Now I actually have it moving more towrd theAdvance direction. I still have to put a timing a light on it and dial it, but it really seems WAAAY better now.

All thats left is to balance/sync the carbs with my homemade manometer, and maybe a little jetting as the weather changes.

Heres the pics of what came out of the carbs. Hard to see, but there was some metallic bits and a few black particles that came out. REAL SMALL, but enough to clog up the works I guess.

Are you running any fuel filters? You’d be surprised how much crap is floating around in these fuel tanks. I got a whole bag full of them on eBay for cheap.

Yep. Running similar ones with pleated paper elements. I think all the gunk was left over from when they were "Professionally" cleaned and rebuilt.

I finally got it all buttoned up enough to go for an actual ride. There's still a few things to do cosmetically, like wrap some of the wiring, and make a cover for the electric tray and various bits like that. Mechaincally, I'll change the oil, and adjust the cam chain and valves and will definitely have to do some jetting. A quick plug inspection showed it was running really lean. But I gotta see, the power of the rephased 750 is pretty freakin awesome. I love the way it pulls, and it sounds so cool with the Pandemonium pipes. This has been an almost 10 year long project, and I seriously could not have done it with this board and the original 650garage board.

you cant really see the smoke, but I definitely gotta bleed the front brake again, she was startin to get away from me there.
 
Could prob post this in the "What did you do today" thread, but I guess its good here too. Now that the bike seems to be running pretty well, aside from some basic maintenance and carb tuning, I got back to the last few punchlist items; wrapping any exposed wires, and covers for the electronics tray. I also wanted to make some covers for the area around the neck gussets. It aint the prettiest stuff on the planet, but this bike was never meant to be pretty. This was the last bit of "fabrication" I had to do, and I just used some thin guage sheet aluminum I had laying around, and rattle canned it flat black. Made some cardboard templates, transferred to the aluminum and cut em out with tin snips. I used rubber rivet nuts to mount them so they'd be easy to remove. It's not much compared to some of the fabrication skills I see on here, but was victory for me.
