Blowing main fuse

Just one more thing - for all newbies....
I strongly recommend that you get a set of JIS screwdrivers. Everything that looks like a Phillips screw on anything built in Japan is not a Phillips. It is a JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) and it is juuuusstt different enough from a Phillips that it can be stripped if you don't use a JIS driver on it (see the sketch below). The difference is subtle - and some may disagree - but in my experience, using the correct tool for the job is always a good practice.

The two best brands are Vessel - and they have very fetching blue-green handles - except for the big #3 Impacta which is silver (and it is ideal for removing the clutch screws on XS650s) and a nice set from GoFastInnovations.com in London, Ontario (see photos below). A set of JIS drivers is easily found on the web from either supplier for a few bucks - and well worth the price if you are going to work on Japanese bikes, cars, toasters...whatever.

Very cool thank you. I will add that before I took the brushes out and cleaned them a bit my main fuse was exploding when I plugged in that connector and now it is just melting the inner component so it seems to not be reacting so harsh at least to plugging that connector in if that’s worth anything
 
I have a 76 which used the separate regulator and rectifier, but your symptoms sound exactly like the problem I had with mine.

Basically what happened with mine was that the diodes in the rectifier failed allowing the battery to discharge itself into the loom. The instant I would connect the rectifier the fuse would blow.

There is a procedure to test the diodes in the manual and I've seen screenshots posted on this site before so if you have a multimeter its worth searching out.

I should have some time tomorrow to tinker with this a bit after some studying it looks like that connector has to do with the relationship between the alternator and the reg/rec? So I could have a short caused by my brushes? Or the wiring coming from my alternator? Or the slip rings? Or a a bad reg/rec not doing it’s job? I’d like to really narrow it down before I start spending money for the wrong stuff
 
What order would you guys start testing these things to try and figure out what’s shorting out my main fuse?
