What have you done to your XS today?

I have since ordered some Allen head replacements. I try to convert to Allen head as much as I can on this bike.

This whole thread as of late has made me even more wary of getting into my carbs. I sent the 42 back today to exchange for the 44. I really wanted it to work but the little purple lines of bruises on my shoulders convinced me otherwise. I have accepted that I am not the man I was 4 long years ago, and never will be again. I guess I’m just too jacked :laugh:

After doing it myself and doing it a bit of research before hand, I can say it's not that bad. I was trying avoid doing this but I wanted clean carburetors more. I'd definitely recommend getting the right screw driver for the throttle plate screws.

With the right tools and some finesse, anything is possible lol.

Am I the only one having a hard time seeing Lakeview on this 650?
 
Lurker Phil, now in Spokane.
Oil and filters change on the 79 Special. Not even a 24" Crescent would break the front drain plug loose. Why do people do that?
The sump filter was in shreds and the other one wasn't much better. No gasket behind that filter and only one of the drain plugs had a crush washer.
I gave it a quick bath and a 30 minute ride. The garage floor is clean under the bike.

Next up is suspension and getting 40 years of oil off the bottom. And maybe some Daytona bars.

Although, he did used to ride a big Harley with all the high-perf engine-mods.....

I really like those bars! Any idea what brand they are?
 
Was having an issue with left carb running richer than right carb on my 81 that I rebuilt a couple years ago. Equal compression on both cylinders, so decided to try the needle mod outlined by XSJohn (RIP) years ago. I have a few extra main needles for the BS34 carbs and knew I could always go back to stock. The mod was done in increments to make sure I didn't over-do it. I am amazed at how well it worked. When done I re-synched the carbs, made sure cam chain was adjusted right, and took it for a strong run pushing over 80mph. Both plugs are now looking good.

Looks great, I see a lot of hard work done there. definitely carpet worthy!

Been working on my alloy battery box/ electric tray today. It's basically 2 mm alloy sheet and some 12x12x1 mm alloy angle, pop riveted together. I wanted to retain the stock rubber mounts, so made some SS saddles and cups to fit the original rubbers. My battery is a Super B 5600, and I have added 10 mm foam on all sides in addition to the stock rubber mounts. The main reasons for making this box was to create space for velocity stacks between filters and carbs, as well as a healthy weight saving. I am also going to use a M-unit and rewire the bike, as there are a few gremlins in the stock harness.

Lots of farm work to do, garden and such. Can't sit here at the comp all day or play with Yamaha. But, off and on, I managed to check the front wheel bearings. The fork bearings ( taper) were loose so I tightened them up. I changed the fork oil and went with 10 ounces of 10 weight in each. My two sissy bar bags came in. I tried both and it's like they were made for it. I put the smaller "Barbarians" bag on.

The both have sturdy mounting points.

The bigger bag is much bigger but mounts the same way.

I messed around and picked up an Akaso Brave 4 action cam. I mounted it on the bars behind the windshield.
I has all the bells and whistles ( anti-shake, it will need this!) It's really a small unit and unclips from it's mount, easy on and off.

It uses a wrist remote control to start and stop video or take a pix. I strapped it around the clutch perch for easy access. I still have to go thru the setup.

So I think I have the bike the way I like it. I may try and do something to the rear brake. It's all new but it's terrible compared to the Honda.
I have a bit over 1,200 miles on the bike since rebuild. Good thing the bikes not red or people would be calling me PeeWee Herman! :laugh:

Looks good, the bags look to be a very useful size. I’d be very interested to hear a little review of that action camera after you’ve lived with it for a while! :thumbsup:
