Since you are removing the nuts I think I would replace the old sealing washers with brass washers.

Just remember the washers need to be 1/8" thick to allow for the amount of thread that goes in those nuts. Thinner washers run the risk of the threads topping out in the acorns nuts so you do not get a reliable torque setting. Naughty me used 3mm washers instead of 3.175mm, but they worked.:rolleyes:
 
Yes, once those nuts seize on there, accurate torque checking is impossible. They'll read tighter than they really are. That's why I feel lubing the threads is essential. And yes, copper washers on the four outside studs. Mine came from eBay .....

I need to make more soon anyway. Does anybody else recommend a thickness dimension based on acorn nut depth interference?
Other diameter dimensions desired?

I made mine from a piece of flat brass I found on the road. It was 3mm by 50mm across. I marked out where each washer would go, center punched and drilled at 10mm. Then crudely cut them out as irregular hexagons, bolted them all together and stuck them in the lathe to trim to their final radius. The center 10mm holes were quite a snug/tight fit over the threaded studs, but I did not have a 10.5mm drill. Before fitting I heated them all to a dull red then cooled in water.

I made some Aluminum washers the same way but never used them because brass looked nicer.
 
Got my copper ones from Ace Hardware locally. About a buck apiece.
 
Just measured the steel washer and it's 3.1mm thick, so 3mm is a good enough match. I thought i had enough M10 copper washers to double up as necessary but just have 4 And they are much too thin so I also need to shop for more washers .....
