I just ordered some new tires- tubes- and rim strips for a Triumph I have
The 16" rims strips are 3 1/8" wide while the 19" strips are 3/4"
Does that seem odd for spoked rims ?
I"ll know more when the ties are off the rims but you would think that if one is 3 1/8" the other would fairly close to that size

I just happened to have a rim strip from my 18” rim lying around. It measures 1 1/4” wide. I just ordered a new replacement, nobody mentioned width , just rim size. I figured it was a standard width?

Nope. But as long as it covers the spoke heads it will be good. Just have to be careful getting the tube back in place . I know I don't have to tell you that, Mailman!

Have trouble breaking the bead?

It just seems so narrow compared to the 16"
Lets see what's in there now

Is the raised area in the center of that 16" rim where the spokes fit that wide? I've never seen one 3" wide, but maybe modern bikes are like that?

Its the rear tire so I'm going to find out soon

I have been in the practice of taping the center strip for the past few years. Seems to be just as effective.

I had some rims made up for my race bike a few years back and the wheel master (That's his nickname) told me he's been taping rims for decades. (I've raced on those rims without issue for the past several seasons). I use a roll of 2" vinyl tape and have been using it to tape/cover the center strip of my rims ever since. It goes on well, and blends nicely with a little heat gun... I usually do a double wrap and it's done. I suppose you could tape and then add the rubber strip...but haven't found the need to.
