Indeed. We buy the machines so we can make tools and parts to use the machines we bought to make tools and part. Downright Freudian.

To be fair tho after making a few things that qualify as the foregoing, I mostly make stuff for my models now. I've even made a few pins and bushings and such on the big lathe out in the garage and actually FIXED a couple of things. Don't hate me...

I was reading about this in the Tech section yesterday. Seems like a nice project. I'll be replacing my clutch plates/springs soon so this is definitely something to go along with the repair.

Our own Jim introduced me to a YouTube channel called This Old Tony which is about a chap who is a superb machinist with some very nice equipment and great sense of humour. This guy really is an expert and he tackles some very interesting projects. In the video below he makes a new drive sprocket for his son’s little electric dirt bike - very interesting!

I just picked up an old Craftsman 101.214 otherwise known as an Atlas 618

She seems to be in good shape. Came with a Dayton 1/2 HP motor with Reverse. The belts that came with it did not match the factory dimensions so mounting everything was a pain. Mounted it on a 1" thick slab of butcher block. Need to get it setup on a stand of some sort.

Came with a 4 Jaw so I can't do much until I get a dial indicator.

I have a very much abused 618 that has a three jaw chuck on it.

Also has what I might call a quick change belt drive, it mounts to the back of the lath and allows you to shift the bets to three different pulleys.

As this was used as an armature lathe it has a motor with a cutter on it that can be used to cut the mica between the segments of a commutator of a starter or generator. This mounts to where the tool holder would normally be mounted.

Also believe there are some tool holders and other parts, like the Atlas electric motor. If any of this would be of interest let me know as it's just been sitting for years gathering dust. I know the screw that moves the carriage is shot and not sure of the gears in the headstock.

Just for kicks I took some pictures of the 618:

This shows the belt drive and motor. Also you can see the motor and attachment for the commutator cutter.

The two gears on the shaft that the chucks mount on are trashed, looks like someone had tried shifting gear with lathe running! While not a machinist I am not that dumb! I grabbed this before it went in scrap bin at work something like 40 years ago so if anyone has need of any parts the price would be right just a few dollars over the cost of shipping from near Syracuse NY.

That's why I'm glad I got an oldy but goody! Plenty of parts to go around for the most part!

First project will be some handle bar bungs and a clutch worm gear extension for foot clutch.

Anyone selling a small turret post or QCTP for this old sucker? I prefer to buy used over new. save a buck or two!

The Lantern works but its not quite rigid enough to part 1" Stainless very well

For a project I’m working on, I needed a 37tooth rear sprocket for my TX750, standard gearing is 17/40 way way undergeared. XS sprockets only go to 34 so. I ordered just any 37 tooth sprocket, I had a 33tooth that I wasn’t using so I cut off the teeth turned it down and spigoted the outer edge, cut the middle out of the 37 tooth and bored it out to match the spigot on the inner. Pressed it together drilled through the joint to suit 5mm C/S screws hey presto.

I got everything out of storage today. So I now have my lathe, horizontal mill, knee mill, MIG and TIG welder in the garage. Still need to get an electrician to put in a 220 line. And soon my refurb hobart plasma cutter will be here. They were having a sale so the refurb airforce 12i with built in compressor was under $600 shipped.

Moving stuff was kind of redneck, the harbor freight engine hoist has been a lifesaver. Now I just have to reassemble the mill.

Yrp! I think if I was selling the equipment or selling the service I would do one nasty item for a customer free, kind of like the drug pusher who hands out free samples! Try it once an you are hooked for life!

Did a Lotus Intake for a buddy and after he bolted it on, he had to unbolt it and deliver everything close to it for the treatment!
I can post some pics and share my setup, and experiences here if its appropriate and people want?

If you want a plasma cutter or welder that is better than china stuff, but don't want to pay miller or Lincoln prices check out www.hobartweldshop.com

They have a reconditioned section. They have a 2yr warranty, free shipping and deliver fast. The handler 140 mig is $130 cheaper in the reconditioned section and the airforce 12ci plasma is over $300 cheaper than normal. You might have to check back from time to time as they don't always have reconditioned in stock.

I've had one of the refurbished handler 140 migs for 4 or 5 years, never had an issue other than running out of gas. Power only has 5 settings, but wire speed is infinite adjustability.

I haven't gotten to use it yet, but I just got one of the 12ci plasma cutters delivered today. I'm really looking forward to putting it through its paces soon.

Here is the outcome of my Covid-19 Lathe Project to keep Mrs Sutton happy. First I made an adaptor for fitting wood in the lathe:

Made four basic legs:

Cut a few tenon joints:

Squeezed a bit of Gorilla glue:

Added a base:

Then last of all did the upholstery this morning:

I now have won infinite time for working on and riding the bike :bike:

Note: Due to Covid-19 I had no access to wood other than pine.
