Hello all, I recently picked up a new to me 81 Xs650. The only issue really is that the stator is bad on it, and I've been trying to figure out what to do. I looked on Mikesxs and saw they have stators, but realized a lot of the members here have had some bad histories with mikesxs. I'm looking to buy one that I can be sure of, so I'm skeptical of using eBay as a source, but other than Mikesxs and eBay, I'm not sure where to turn. Any tips or suggestions? Thanks for reading. This is my first xs so I'm psyched to be working on this old bike and getting her back to her original glory. Anything helps!

I had an volt meter and tested the three wires coming into the stator, and didn't see anything as far as voltage even when the power was on. I'm new to this kind of charging system so and help on what to test and what to look for is greatly appreciated

do you have the service manual? the '81 supplement, also called "h" is what you want. available free online. you test the stator according to the procedure in there, a certain resistance between all three white wires in any combination, no opens, no shorts. if you get that, the stator's good, no need to measure voltage for that

I don't have the manual for it. That'll be the next thing I pick up. Any guesses as to what could be going wrong within the electrical system to stop it from charging? Brushes? Wiring? I have no idea where to start, other than testing.

could be anything until you start systematic testing, going by the manual and also look up "charley's charging guide." congratulations and welcome, btw. '81 is the best year, but i'm biased...
