TCI Replacement 2020 It Works

Jim, gotta say that your striking the line to find the placement for the magnet beat me by a mile. Great job.
Thanks... but I'll be honest here... it was just pure luck. I had a TCI and non-TCI rotor sitting next to each other on the bench. I sat down on my stool and the TCI rotor was positioned so I was staring across it and noticed the direct line between the timing mark and magnet. Hmmm I thought to myself, it couldn't really be that easy..... could it? Well sumbich... it really was that easy.
Have you modded one too?

Yeah, there's a thread somewheres....... I did a tracing on an embedded rotor and then transferred the tracing over to a non magnet rotor and then epoxied the magnet on. It worked but not well, I was sorting some other issues at the time that may have affected performance. I put it on the back burner and ran the stock embedded rotor. I may revisit now with your updated layout.....all other issues have been fixed so it will be an immediate pass or fail.

Not yet. Rewiring the bike to correct big mistakes made 3 years ago when I created the wiring loom.
Have hotwired in a gonzo and started on carb cleaner is as close as it gets.
Now if after 2 upper level lows that have blown through and the tropical storm to my south if I can dry out enough to move forward .

Notice where the full advance mark is on non tci stator?
2many's photo of the nylon screw mod for brush holders for non tci rotors to use late solid state voltage regulators

I guess I fall into the "are doomed to repeat it " category.

Here's a word I don't get to use often and applies perfectly here... serendipity
  • the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way:"a fortunate stroke of serendipity"

At least the solder joints won't flex as much.
Trying to get to town to HF to get something for the rotary tool to cut plastic box off.
Just an idea... I fixed my wife's favorite coffee mug by gluing the handle back on with epoxy. It felt super strong after the epoxy set up. The epoxy repair failed the first time she put hot coffee in it.

It may be possible to heat the unit and extract the 'guts'. Might be worth a try if you're going to cut it up anyway.

2many mod.......lol.........
Your right Skull.
What I meant to say was this was Steve's photo of the brush mod. I was using the photo to illustrate the location of the fully advanced mark on the older stators rather than the degree wheel superimposed I futzed around with earlier in the week. That was the history I was referring to.

As I said at the beginning of this thread I have read Mriggs and Pete's postings on regulators and ignition options. I was playing with the HEI igniter on one of my cars a long time ago after reading their posts. The discussions about using the HEI, Pete's design of the original Pamco, and interfacing pickups were what brought me to the point of experimenting with igniter boxes and PMA's.

Standing on the Shoulders of Titans.

I added the "Gonzo" box and test fired it up. Sounded good. Will test ride later.
Be sure and check your timing to make sure something doesn't end up with a hole in a inappropriate place. It's hot over there. Hell it's hot here for that matter. I'm shopping a/c for my building.

Oh yeah. I used a timing light last night! I put it just a degree or 2 retarded from the firing mark. It seemed to take a LOT of RPMS before the advance kicked in. When I took her on the road it felt good. Smooth. Yes it is hot here but, it's below 100* today so it's a cool day. LOL! It seemed to not buzz as much as the PAMCO at upper RPM's. I want to maybe retard the setting a touch more as an experiment. Overall I'm very pleased with this system. Can't beat the price. Super easy to rig up. I can see it would be more difficult on a pre TCI models, but not impossible.

INteresting performance results !
Can't wait to recieve mine.

Holy hell, I missed the action!
It appears that 2 sellers on the smiley face vender were responsible for all the listings . I think between the two of them 9 boxes were available. They have phoned home for more and it appears they are going to turn up sometime after the 15th of this month. Don't you know they are wondering what the hell is going on. Sat on the the shelves for months and sold out in a week.

I rode the SG for 55 miles the last time I had some saddle time. That was Sunday (I think). Just out of curiosity, I kickstarted her. She fired up first kick.
You are surrounded by automotive test facilities due to climate so I figure if it works well for you then the rest of us should be ok.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I have received so much help on getting my bike together from this forum and it's great that I have something to give back.
