Not going off on that tangent but found my less than empty can of Deoxit this morning...hiding like a snake in the grass. Never fails.

Well that’s interesting you say that. I hadn’t noticed that. You know, maybe that was original. It would explain something that had me scratching my head. That gasket sealer that had been brushed on , had spots where it had ran and the direction of the runs was UP.
That is to say, it looks like the gasket sealer had been applied to the case when the engine was out of the frame and inverted upside down.

>>> When I offed the two plugs wiped my finger across them while watching the flow of black oil I said the horror...then realized they were magnetic....ditto two on the original filter (see pic) . I question how this "blow by oil valve" works or if mine is even correct. Has a not moveable ball screwed into the bolt and a not purposeful spring inside? Can't find if I'm missing a part there..

Silly stuck steel ball came loose with a paperclip. Cleaned, back together. BUT, After going through the whole Mailman's XS2 full on resto threads and being ready today to fill up with motor oil, replace carbs, adjust valve lash, points and new wires in....a little voice tells me not to spin the motor, just take it apart and look 1st. Besides, I have some of the best talent in the country close by to handle any machine, engine,Yamaha work I need.

@yamahama , Mailman started this thread to document his bikes restoration, not as a catchall for other bike work. There's a thread here titled What Have you Done to your XS Today. Perhaps the work on your bike would be more appropriate there? Or you could even start your own build thread. I'm sure a lot of us would be happy to follow along.

@yamahama, I think that would be a great idea! That way you could post photos and questions all in one spot and the rest of us could keep track of your progress. We all love a good restoration!

Great. I concur. Still new to navigating here. Thanks both.
*** maybe if a site administrator sees my posts above they can just delete it here and I'll migrate it elsewhere. TY.

Humm, I'm reading my future. Leaks ! Actually I had very good success with that red Permatex aerobic sealant goop that starts to set up after the air gets squooshed out...like metal to metal. I stopped the leak between my Jag engines rope seal between the trans and engine. Also on the ever drippy oil filter mound on that engine. Circuit board >>> Deoxit D5 spray..just spray, don't touch. Think I'll try to balance the combustion chamber cc's to dead even if need be.

Please start a build thread for your bikes and your thoughts.
