BTW, Gilboa NY is known for a few things, not the least of which is their fossil museum.

Eospermatopteris
An incredibly preserved example of a 400 million year old Devonian tree. This very large fossil is one of the famous Gilboa fossils discovered in Gilboa, New York. The tree stump clearly shows the wide support base and beginning of the root system at the bottom of the stump for this fern-like tree.

The '82 is running superbly.
Syncho'd the carbs last week, so with the end-weighted OEM '75 handlebars and your suggested foam grips, I've got minimal vibes to the hands.
And with Jim's rebuilt rotor, I'm seeing consistent 14.7v at speed on the meter. Couldn't be happier :)

Slight thread drift: An outfit called Schramm Tract-Air made a tractor-based self-propelled air compressor. Almost bought one years ago but better sense prevailed.
I believe those Schramm compressors were built from 4 cylinder engines modified where two of the cylinders were engine and the other two were compressor cylinders. At the quarry many years back we had a tow-behind Schramm that was made that way. forget if it was a diesel or gas on the engine half. Also we had a second hand truck from the local big tire dealer and for a compressor in the back it had a V-8 or maybe V-6 gas engine that was converted by making one bank engine and one bank compressor.

Now who is going to be the first here to take a "spare" XS650 engine and build there own XS325 powered compressor? Let's see remove rocker arms and valves from one cylinder. Remove carb from that cylinder and replace with a inlet check valve and another check valve on the exhaust port. A little work adapting an unloader from a air compressor and should be good to go! A few other mods would be needed to get pressure up but it would be do-able.

Any idea what the theoretical maximum pressure a thing like that could develop would be? In my rednecked ignerance, I'm thinking it should be a significant portion of the 150PSI generally accepted as a good compression for an XS. Ignoring for the moment the 325cc engines limited power.
 
Dad had one made from single cylinder gas motor, cam removed, intake valve just a light spring, exhaust kept shut with a stronger spring plug was the air outlet, driven by electric motor it worked fine.
The BMW came with a spark plug hole powered tire inflator.
 
Place I worked at as a kid had a chevy 250 "sweetwater six" turned into a compressor. 3 cyl running and 3 compressing. We used it to run a sandblaster that could burn through about 100lbs of sand in under 5 min.

Just found this thread. Beautiful pix. Gilboa, hell, I was there, passing through on the way back from Lake George. There's really fertile black soil in a glacial valley which looked to be an ancient bog. I'd like to see the museum. Just found this place on Sunday. It's in Jockey Hollow State Park, near Washington's Headquarters in Morristown, NJ. We took it on cruisers on roads through the park and found mountain bike trails along a section with a beautiful stream, lined with Flox and Revolutionary War trench lines, called the Patriot's Trail. I'll throw the mountain bikes in the van and head back there. It's less than an hour away from me. We stopped in one spot on a hill with troop huts and another fence line and realized my uncle had taken me there when I was 6 years old. That was quite a flash back!

That's a sleek ride. My wife came from New Milford, Conn. and was vice president of their hunting club. They had permission from farmer's to hunt their lands and some were club members. Once, I took her to her hunting grounds and her and her dog went out into the field in a snow storm to hunt pheasant that were stocked in bushes, I stayed in the car and they were out for a couple of hours in the storm with no success, before the her Springer decided to call it quits and came back to the car, leaving her alone in the field. The beautiful farms are still there, but route 7, from where you exit route 84 to along the Housatanic River is getting built up with strip malls.
