What have you done to your XS today?

Just putting this out there, I’m selling my original exhaust system mufflers in the far sale section. They have some rust through but are still fully funcitonal and possibly repairable. Chrome is good on them except for the rust through spots.

Also, a pair of two xs’s just popped up on the local CL for 1500.00 a 76 with the black and gold tank and a yellow shitty looking one. Both run but the yellow doesnt have a title. Every time I jump on something this happens. Oh well. The boulevard’s power and practicality really do blow these XS’s out of the water. I’m happy to have a practical touring bike and one beautiful classic. Three XS’s in the garage would still not give me a practical, comfortable, dependable touring option.

That's right. I have an XS Eleven Special and while it has longer legs than the XS650, I don't find it practical either. Just the same, it has taken a few 3,000 mile trips.

Welllllllllllll it's me again. Guess what I did to my XS today?

My throttle was sticking so I disassembled the throttle assembly and adjusted the cable. Then it was still being touchy so I went here: http://www.amckayltd.com/carbguide.pdf I ended up spraying starting fluid on the OUTSIDE of the carbs while the bike was running. Turns out I had an air leak and was running lean. Tip: Spray the carb cleaner in small bursts and wait about 5 seconds to see if there is an increase in RPM.

Then the throttle wouldn't rev past 3000 RPM's WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH THIS UP DOWN NONSENSE - PICK ONE

So naturally, I went here: https://www.xs650.com/threads/bike-wont-rev-past-4000-rpm.42136/
I fixed it by unplugging my regulator and rectifier (I don't know which is which) while the bike was turned off and then the problem was fixed :)

But
then it stopped working. Naturally.
I believe I will need to replace the magnet, recharge it, or glue a rare earth magnet to the rotor.

When I was riding the other day I noticed a rattle behind me on the left side, and as it turns out the stock rear exhaust mount was just flinging around...Somehow or other the two bolts that connect the exhaust to the mount vanished.

Never a dull moment when you rebuild a bike you bought not running AM-I-RIGHT?

Finished removing my 256 clutch pack, disassembled, cleaned, measured, bagged n tagged and photo'd everything. Excepting rust stains on steel and in the fiber plates, measured 1.6 mm steel; 3.51-3.55 ish all coated discs. All the rubber looked good. Bet I could put it back in and go on my way...maybe add some oil holes inside. I did not have a lock tab under the center nut. Springs all measured close to spec. and Phillips bolts were 3.8" tip to head flange. I do see physical differences in the latter clutch packs. If I come across one at the right price, I may swap out and save these 256 parts that are very usable. Try and look for some good (better) valve stem seals....The case seems well sealed.

The rebuild kit from Mike's arrived and after running a brake hone thru the cylinder it all went back together with no drama. I also took the opportunity to adjust the valves and polish up the valve covers. Test ride later on today...

Hey guys I need some help, I tried to start my XS650 today but it wouldn’t. I pulled out my multimeter and my BRAND NEW battery was at 1.5v ... I then pulled the battery from the bike and it’s been recharging? It’s at 6V and increasing right now. If anyone could shed some light on how this is happening or how to fix it I would be very thankful :)

Got some rings that were 256...should have been 1.2 mm tops (447 pistons). Sending them back. Need to find some 447-11610-10-00 ring set. Still haven't honed yet but, was able to still see TDC top ring imprint in barrel still. Measured the piston to be at zero deck height from there. I'm not going to get too cute on not *guessing right* on CR by messing with head surface. waiting to see later when I torque it down. See cleaned up ports....About all can do for my application. upload pics later.

yamahama I have to ask why are you so hung up on the CR? I've rebuilt 2 256 motors that run just fine. Granted I'm not looking for the last Nth of horsepower out of them. I even used Athena head gaskets which are a little thicker. I'm sure that lowered the CR. Motors run just fine.

As I stated...and you are correct, I am not concerned with finding 9:1 CR on this little hemi-dome/single plug head now....just a habit. Here are the ports now..waiting valve guides and maybe have to order rings from Total Seal if I can't find a set online. Besides, guys at the machine shop went after me and each other like my old grand ma and spinster great aunt...the volumes have changed now...if you shave it it'll mess the steel and allum. up, use so and so's belt grinder...your at "0" deck height now. Then started in on Yamaha 650's....said he had a TX once...a friend of his filled the handle bars up with lead, lol.
