What have you done to your XS today?

Making Progress on Blue '77
Next to get a sidestand on it and fenders and headlight then install the new harness.
Nice to have it rolling again.

Just bookmarked a vibe on vibration: see below. They make this stuff in thin adhesive tape, bushing , washer forms, etc. Thinking those old rubber upper fork parts, seat mounts and assorted handle bar areas...Everytime I see a spray can of rubber undercoating I have I think ..."spray into handlebar tubes" to attenuate the vibrating forces. Maybe a wrap of this tape under the grips, replace the butyl rubber bushings. I found some 447 1st OS rings on Ebay..trying to work a deal right now. Clean the frame a little, sand if not raining in an hour or so. Going to see a bike painter tomorrow AM...painted the bike in my avatar on the left here :geek:

The only thing that helped me with bar vibration was a set of bar end weights I put on last year (or was it the year before?) Cheap on Amazon if I remember right. Did have to swap the throttle-side screw for a longer one and add some shims for clearance.

Well, I went down to the university to make a phone call to Europe this morning and do some bulk printing and the clutch started to feel a bit "crispy" on the way back home....
Clutch Cable - June-19-2020.jpg

Phewww....that was close.

Well, I guess I know what I am doing this afternoon.

It's always something, isn't it, lol. Is that, by chance, a Motion Pro cable? They're supposed to be pretty durable and long lasting. Have you kept the ball end greased? It needs to rotate slightly in the lever as you pull it in. What happened to yours is what can happen if it doesn't.

I am pretty sure that it is a MikesXS cable actually and I just ordered another one from them because getting a real Motion Pro would take a while and I am about to install my only spare cable. I will re-stock with MP once the border reopens but this will do in the meantime.

I will say that this one lasted for about 4 years and more than 12,000 miles, so not too bad overall for $17.95 CAD.

I'd check the diameter of the wire on your old broken cable and the new one you get. Old originals and the Motion Pros are .098". Many times the Mikes cables are skinnier, only about .078". I had one of those break on me in about 5K miles. Here you can easily see the difference. The skinny cable is on the right .....

Yup, I’m afraid she was pretty frayed (see what I did there) and indeed, the old cable is a 0.083” dia. (ie. on the skinny side) unit from the Canadian division of MikesXS. It certainly appears that I got my money’s worth out of this particular clutch cable....

Oh well - I’ll get a Motion Pro shortly and just keep an eye on the (also skinny) replacement.

I got my motion pros on Amazon. They don’t have amazon up north, eh?

YUP - we do, but I wanted it fast so I ordered it from our version MikesXS and it will be here on Monday morning.

I always carry a spare JIC

Yes - good plan Jim. I’ll be putting my new spare in my tailbag on Monday and then ordering Motion Pros for my bikes that afternoon. In the meantime, Lucille is all buttoned back up and ready for a ride this weekend.

NOW - Aunt Mildred says....you boys all get out there and check your clutch cables at once!

Funny you should say that... :D As I noted somewhere else, a couple of days ago I pulled the shocks off my '80 to correct the adjusters being oriented wrong (i.e. unusable) and while I already had it apart that far I pulled the tank and rerouted the clutch cable AGAIN. This time it almost feels good... almost.

Zip tied it judiciously in the hopes it will stay put.
