What have you done to your XS today?

Buzz,
" deep, dark, cobwebby crevices of my brain that don't get accessed much. " I can't even get to that part.
The rubber on the battery boxes will deteriorate with time and heat and look like a fire. It will get gooey and stick to everything looking like a fire. But if no wires are burned...

Oh yes, but there were definitely wires burned - I think the battery melted down, which dripped black rubbery crap on a couple parts of the frame. It's all cleaned off now. And thankfully the terrible neighbors above my garage weren't home so I went after the remaining subframe stubs with the flap disc. Fabrication to begin in short order.

Hey buzzword, those plugs remind me of aircraft sparkplugs. Yeah, that head is a bit, umm, ....crusty.....

They do look like aircraft plugs! Didn't even make that connection until now.

Renthal road medium, I think. Fitted them a couple of years ago and really like them.

Just checked old emails. : October 2017 - Renthal Road Superbike Motorcycle/Bike Bars/Handlebars - Medium Bar Type - Black. £34.75 GBP
Thanks for the info! I've already swapped mine, but I think yours are a bit lower... not changing again though.

Sprayed the top of the frame finishing the primer before top coat coming Saturday...let it sit dry, sand a few spots smoother sometime today. Primer has a 'fuzzy' feel in some spots. Right now, reconciling a large parts order that included things I didn't order and not shipped, things I apparently ordered in duplicate and triplicate?? Not worried about that, totally pissed about receiving another set of "447' OS Yamaha p. rings off of ebay that are wrong. Last set I returned were perfect, new unopened but 256 not 447. The ones now look to be miss-matched. Both sets opened, marked, on side has proper shaped second ring other side is square shaped 2nd ring both top rings 1.2 mm but look totally different. One side, with the proper shaped 2nd ring has oil rings that are thicker that the other side. Now, I have to deal with sending these back...death buy 1000 cuts. Feeling a bit frazzled today. Waiting on tank coating supplies.

Ahh....the joys of internet shopping.

pretty sure I cracked a rib trying to use the crappy Chinese bender I bought to remake my subframe. Saved like $600 over buying a JD2 or similar, but not worth it. Might have to enlist the help of a professional....

Tussle to Fit New Exhaust
I've had this brand new in box Cndn Mikes exhaust system probably for 6 years, waiting to use on a special bike. The usual conflict between the lower mount bolt and the pipe fitting into the head was ok on the left side, but double bad on the right.
I will go do something else and come back to it when it's cooler in the garage.

Had the same problem with the SG. I took the head pipe and used a belt sander to regrind the angle of the flange that fits into the head. Little changes until the angle was right and it positioned itself correctly on the back end to fit up with the muffler.

Hummm, Jim had a good idea. I just made the lower mount hole BIGGER, (used a washer and longer bolt) and it fit but barely. Hated the adapters but with a piece of 1 inch wide spring steel strap to take up the space using two adapters, AND red high temp RTV, they were tight and didn't leak. ( Then came the pea-shooters perfect fit, and I was off to the races!)

Jim, which side of the flange did you start relieving on? I am guessing the area close to the centerline of the bike so that the tail can swing in a bit closer and back. And maybe a bit on the opposite side of that as well.

I think I took a pic.... lemme look for it....

No pic in my exhaust folder. Iirc... it was too far out and high... hitting the brake lever. So I relieved the outboard and top. Belt sander made it pretty easy to keep the flange face nice and flat. Whichever direction you want the tail to go... grind the opposite on the flange. Just did 1 axis at a time. Ground the top until the tail dropped to the same height as the opposite one (on the centerstand, ruler from floor to pipe), then outboard 'till it was the same as other measured against the frame.
Just remember whichever direction you want to move the tail, grind the opposite side of the flange. Here's a visual (exaggerated). Pipe is too high referenced to the ruler but flange fits inside the head....

Moved until the orientation is correct and the dotted line is what needs taken off.

Finally changed the choke gaskests and that helped significantly. The left carb still sounds to be running a bit lean.

What motivated me to finally do this was my friend who finally got his 75 on the road yesterday. Unfortunately tho we didn't get to ride very far because a mile down the road his throttle cable broke. He was beyond pissed having waited so long to get his bike on the road and then have a silly thing like that set him back about a week
