What have you done to your XS today?

Shiny goodness. Doing an assembly without rings to check piston to valve/head clearance. 700cc kit from Hoos with a copper headgasket.

Got Cloudy When I Pushed It Out

Looked Even On The Bench

Well the list is getting smaller. Cleaned out the tank today using metal rescue overnight, probably soaked 20 hours in various positions. Flushed out with water and then put a mixture of gas and oil in it to slosh around and protect it till the first gas.
Popped the carbs on first try and called it a day.
Monday planning to complete the wiring, plumb the carbs install front brakes. It will be a few days yet before the blue 77D tins go on.

Boy! You’re doing such a nice job on this bike, are you thinking of keeping it?

Thanks Mailman.
I put all my good post '74 stuff on it, so will get the Ontario Safety Certificate when done, then advertise it at a "cheeky" amount and see what happens.
I expect that I will be keeping it to ride.

Re sprayed some primer on the swing arm on a thin spot that takes direct abuse after trying some 800 grit sanding on a thick blob on bottom or SA. Primer sanded nicely. Wiped it w/ solvent, 15 mins now on the clock to do black top coat (with in 1 hr or after 48 hrs.) See how it works on SW . If OK, I top coat the frame today...Found some old art work. Found a sticker for lakeview's bike.

What's today? A yesterday photo before the semi-gloss spray. This primer left some "peach fuzz" spots that needed smoothing. Uses the 800 wet/dry dry and with one or two pulls, like pulling wet,no real pressure, it's done. Now Just finished both sides of frame looking from the bottom up. Will sit another 2 days and see how it looks when I flip it over in the sunshine. Looking pretty glossy.

a piece of paper came with my pea-shooters that stated to clean the oil and fingerprints off the pipes and mufflers before starting or they would bake on. Also, I always wipe everything down before I ride so it shines "real purdy". (Think I'm gona move to a rear LED. :umm:)

I installed baffles in my Norton Peashooter mufflers. They really quieted them down, maybe too much, lol, because it seems performance above 4K may be hampered some. I couldn't mount them in the ends of the mufflers, there wasn't any flat flange to drill through for the set screw. So, I opted to install them into the ends of the headpipes with a couple pop rivets, sticking back into the mufflers, sort of like a baffle within the existing baffle .....

They come with a little end cap that blocks off the end and forces the exhaust to go through all the little holes down the sides of the tube. I'm thinking that full end cap is a bit too much, stifling things a little too much. I may try just a couple of bolts in an "X" pattern in the end .....

Hopefully that will flow more and better but still cut the noise down some.

Could do what I did to my tiger. I tried taking the baffle out= too loud. Baffle in=sounded stock. Slowly shortened baffle until it had more sound, but no drone at cruise.

Took it for a 30 minute ride today to see how hot the bike gets and this was the result:
20200629_180314.jpg

115C at its highest which is 239F. Kinda makes me want to install an oil cooler. It took a long time to get that hot and then the clutch started to slip a bit. Other than that it was a nice ride.

5T,
My pea shooters are really tight on my pipes, a good thing. I don't think they would slip over the rivet heads without filing the heads, or using counted sunk rivets. " They come with...? " Where did you get those little gems, if ya don't mind me asking?

Is that an XS650-specific temp gauge or just something you rigged up?

I got it from hieden tuning. Theres no marks on the dipstick to indicate oil level and its also not as long as the stock dipstick. Its short by about like 3/16th of an inch.

Those storied 4 male blue leads are now joined together per forum guidance - doesn't seem right just to put 4 wires together without a power source but I guess it's somwhere back in the harness.
Tomorrow double check the coil wire connections and fit a battery.
Got the lawn cut today too!

I hate to go get one. In this Texas heat, (and the dogs days are some time away yet,) the reading would probably make me bet my writches!

Yes, it was a chore getting the mufflers back on over the rivet heads, lol. I didn't think such a small thing like that would interfere so much. I had to drive the mufflers on with a big rubber mallet to start and then a BIG hammer (like a 4 lb. beater) against a 2 x 4 "pad". I put 3 rivets in the first one but it was so hard to drive that muffler on, I only used two on the second one. It went on lots easier. I know getting them off is going to be a chore but they must come off so I can tinker with the baffles, lol. Needless to say, I'll be removing one of the rivets on the 3 rivet side. Here's a link to the baffles, took about a month to get them. I got the long 35mm size which fit quite nicely inside my 1.5" O.D. headpipe .....

Shop around because the prices fluctuate a lot. I paid less than $5 each for them a month ago.

Thanks 5T! You da Man!
They look like they fit pretty tight as is? I'm wondering if I can't file a little "L" bayonet mount in the pipe outlet then weld a pin in the end of the baffle and take it down the thickness of the pipe. Slather it with red RTV push it in, give it a twist and let it dry? If it went anywhere it would be inside the muffler and you would know right away! :)
