Wow, That's Red
Wasn't hardly a month ago I was telling MaxPete how awful a red framed bike looked, but bear with me. First, I am painting cause the weather is a bit cooler and dryer, and there are 2 bikes ahead of this one, but a change is as good as a rest.
Ages ago I bought a failed project that came with a yellow tracker body and tank.

(73 for mock up purposes only). Then another with a minimally modified frame.

Despite adding an electronics tray, PO left the mounting studs for the battery box, so I will grind off the tray and go back to stock there.
Give me a couple days to do that and paint it.
Macro stuff is fun.

How about an Oil change? ( Oh man , Thu, we've seen more oil changes... Aintcha got...) Not like this one.
Mailman is not up right now so I'm gona sneak this in before he catches me. First, he needs to change his name to "Mr. Clean." Second, I'm not gona try and match the pix of his last oil change, beautifully clean gold and silver sump filter and so forth... No, I decided during a short ride, first in a while, due to a capped molar going super-nova and my Dentist's office being devoid of personnel due to virus, to change my oil and document it by taking "beauty Shots" of a dirty machine. Gotta be a first. I will preface by saying there were no rubber bits in my sump or metal bits in my oil filter. The Sump filter looked like I stole it from Mailman and no animals were hurt or hurting during this change but me. I also want to mention that you can't make this stuff up. And also, Texans are long on breath and short on pecker, but I'll try and be brief. Lets get started.

I gathered all needed items and tools, outdoor creeper, ( 4 X 4 piece of cardboard). I pop the latex and pull the oil pump cover. Oil is hot! I pull the oil pump filter, check it and have an exchange ready.
300 Peg shot.jpg
It's damn HOT! I look for the 10mm and there is a space between the 9 and 11mm sockets. Fussing and cussing and looking in all the same places many times and not finding it. Tooth is starving me to death! I'll try a sandwitch. No bread. I head up to the big house and gets a sandwich, trying to eat on one side thinking where that damn socket could be. Ole lady is doing something. I said " Whatcha got?" she said "Wrinkle cream". I said, "Oh, I thought they were natural!" She threw something at me. It was a 10 mm socket! ( :bs: He's lying, boys! He found it on the end of the 1/4 X 4 inch extension with the wobbledee - wobbledee).

I pulled the drain plugs and let her drain.

Crossed the front fender.

I took a few beauty shots as the oil was draining.

Opened the seat in preparation for new fuel filters.

Got her all put back together, serviced and ready for a 30 mile round robin leak check. Quick check of my sissy bar bag and good to go! ( Make sure I had the tooth ache medicine, just in case!)

How's that for different?

Thanks, Mailman. ( You wasn't up either. I looked around the Garage real good! :)) ( Yeah, it quit hurting. Doc said it died. Took it long enough! ) Cost me $200 to find that out. She said I need to have it pulled cause it's not worth saving! hahaha.)

Hey, Buzz! That is really looking good!

Well, except, It looks like there is a big miss-match between the valve cover and head. Did you say something about the head and valve cover not being matched units? Could cause cause all kinds of problems.

Angus,
You must have a barn the size of Gary’s! It seems like you have an endless supply of old 650’s! :)

Is it just me or is he like the Ford model T assembly line of Canadian XS 650s long lost? He just keeps pumping them out! Lol I love this kind of entertainment to see what will roll out next. Still drooling from that 77 :D

Nah, they're matched - nothing is bolted together in that pic - just looks weird!

Next, Clean and Paint the Battery Box
Got the tray ground out and trimmed the cross pieces so they will be just big enough to mount the tracker "body" so now I have the tedious work of prepping the battery box for paint.
Mailman - This is the last non stock frame I have except for the Brat style which is "on hiatis".
Superjet - the 77 will stick around for a while as it deserves proper fettling. It breaks up about 4000 rpm for a bit till 5000, so will look at the carbs after I get the 73 out of the TV room.
I like to be busy.

Someone say battery box? OK IF I can find my 2 seat hinges...I will compete 'everything black' painting this weekend. Been looking for them for too long. used my Dremel cutter and cut off a seat hinge nut that had *something* stuck in it. Welded several new 6 mm X1.0 nuts on the back n prep to get the seat pan, rubber edge welting, original cover and trim strip to the upholstery shop..May see the rubber strip in photo next to battery box hanging after cleaning and dripping with Deoxit D5. Interesting, guy that's making the foam etc. asked me if I has that rubber strip.

I'm wondering if all of the under seat pan screw tops holding brackets, etc left the Yamaha factory painted black or shiny like the brackets were put on after the upholstery was done?? Not looking to enter a "show"...those days are over. But, if one has a choice...do it right the 1st time. I just sanded the glossy under like I have nothing better to do and get the little pin prick holes out. 800; 1000; 5000 grit pad using Krud Cutter solvent in between wipes. Going to let temp. and humidity stabilize in my custom  spray booth. Not going to use that original rubber trim, seat pan edge strip. doing something better that will stay on while foam is made and seat cover put on. before.JPG 800 1000 5000 sand.JPG

Found a little vibration on my way back from work around noon yesterday on a ride before sun got too hot. Found an intermitent wobble on the rear wheel while free spinning on center stand. Check tension and oh too tight. Adjusted and lubed the chain and checked wear. All good now. Greased the swingarm bushings while around the rear. Got 2020kms since rebuild and real happy how its been running. :D JC

Tank from an old smaller Suzuki, can be mounted to achieve that cafe straight line
between seat and tank bottom.

Tracker version has more appeal to me.
I will roll this one back into the shed for a few weeks and get going on the '73.
