What have you done to your XS today?

Slow day @ the bit-mines...read the 'clutch' section in tech again earlier. Amazing how (I) remember what I read before, even after taking some notes the second, third time reading. Probably should have scrounged around Ebay for a whole later model clutch pack...still could with the sprung bottom. My 7 Kevlar friction plates are 3.0 mm and probably just keep cleaning the 6 dirty metal rings and throw the extra I bought in. Was using 400 grit and that krud-kutter solvent on the metal rings seemed to do the trick....bump up to some 150 grit...quicker. Looked at my one-piece rod, after attempting polishing a while back with up to some 2500 grit black magic wet/dry. Seems I could buff it some. Eh, just going to be careful how it goes back together with some of the other new fixing parts.

Mailman, I keep going to your 1st ride video (with the police car) and listening to the clutch....sounds easy breezy.

I actually went out in the garage and did something on my build today .:yikes: I cut off all the unnessary clutter that no XS650 needs. Well at least the ones at my house anyway. Another day of grinding and smoothing and it`ll be ready for the first sandblast then weld up a new back half. New GopherGlass is on it`s way.

My headlight died today - went out as I was riding but if I pressed on the light it would come back on. I took the light off to see if anything was obviously loose and I found that two of the metal prongs from the back of the light had broken off and we're stuck in the plug!

I was going to replace the headlight anyway and had ordered the MikesXS headlight assembly with the halogen bulb. It came with a plug in the box and the description says it needs to be soldered, but it looks the same as the old one. I know nothing about electronics - is there any reason I can't use the existing plug? Here's a link to the new assembly - https://www.mikesxs.net/yamaha-xs650-xs-oem-type-headlamp-assy-chrome-oem-584-84310-60-00.html

*Edit:* Took the new assembly apart quick - old plug does fit the new bulb but I didn't turn the bike on because again, I know nothing... Don't want to blow something if there is a difference and I do need the new plug

Just take the blade that stayed in the headlight plug and you should be good to go.

Sold my bike today. I have another and now getting back into sledding. Need the space in the garage and will be sticking to one bike....for now lol. Will set the money aside and help my son buy his first car or put in his education. Either way he will be getting it. Will have a parts sale sometime in the upcoming weeks once all is sorted out. Thanks to all for the help on my build and an everyday chuckle. I will be still looking around and never know maybe another XS will become part of my family again. JC

Well don’t be a stranger, you don’t need a Yamaha to hang out here. Btw, sledding? Is that a snow thing? ( says the boy from the desert) like dog sledding?

Hey Bob sorry snowmobiling yes. Was into it earlier in life, but did set it aside for 17 years......guess how old my son is?!? Lol :laugh2: my wife and I grew up with snowmobiles and was a good time to get back in. I will not be away from this forum as it is one of the best from what I have seen. Even the social media pages have nothing on this place.

Sweet, thanks. I had taken the blades out to see if it actually did fit, just didn't want to fire it up without some confirmation. Just tested and it works fine! The headlight indicator doesn't work now, but I'm not too concerned about that

Doesnt Yamaha make snowmobiles?

I have another Yamaha bike btw guys. Yes they sure do make sleds. My brother and sister in law have one each (Sidewinder 1000 triple turbo) and I have a NA Skidoo 1200 triple. No competition from either sled speed wise. Handling is another topic but wont go there. Thats why I purchased mine. I told my wife I purchased the better handling/riding sled for us. If you dont like it, guess you gotta stay home by the fire!! Lol :laugh2:

Just finished putting on the new centrestand. Holy hell, I hope to never have to do that again. Almost two hours working in 34C heat. The new stand from Mike's didn't quite line up and eventually took some biiiiig hammering to get in. Then the god damn spring, holy hell. 20 minutes of trying to get it on, read some threads for advice, another 20 minutes, repeat till finally I got it. Not sure if I should have ordered a new spring or if they all just suck but it doesn't matter, I got it down.

Hopefully it cools off a bit later tonight so I can go for a ride and test out the new light

Shove it full of quarters. Loonies or Toonies would work also.

That's exactly what I did in the end, using big metal washers. I crammed as much as I could in but it still wouldn't make it. Had to take my big pliers wrench and leverage against something (forget what) to get the last little bit needed to make it in the hole

While we're on center stand...I use mine allot when I park it at home it is usually on center stand. What is the best way to grease the pivot points, bolts?
