Hi!

It`s been a while since we took apart my sons 81`engine due to a oil issue. But now... When I install the shaft that runs through the camshaft for the contactbreakers and advanceunit, I don`t know what position it should be in, as it has no pin to slot into. I can place it anywhere if you know what I mean. What am I missing here..?

Update; It`s the weights that will determine the position, but still it can be 180 degrees off? Or the contactbreakers will "switch" position?

Thanks!

when the advance unit is installed it has a slot for the pin.
Just a dirty ole shot but the disk the weights fit to has a slot in the bore.

An 81 motor would not have come with any of these parts.

I believe European bikes all came with points... ?
Or am I thinkin' about Oceania bikes....:umm:

I think you're referring to the little locating pins in the ends of the advance rod for the points cam and the little slotted disc on the advance side? Yes, they can be installed in 2 different positions, 180° apart. One is correct, the other will throw the timing off 180°. The "secret" here is to install both pins so they stick out the same side of the rod and face the same direction .....

There are alignment slash marks on the advance side, on the advance backing plate and the little disc, to help with getting the install correct. The slash marks should align, or very nearly align. Wear in the advance unit may cause them to be off a little as seen below (yellow arrows) .....

The green arrow shows the alignment pin location.

Thanks a bunch all! It`s clear now. I overthought and complicated the issue... Anyway, that means it is not a 81 motor.. How can I find out what motor is in the bike? From the engine number? I saw there was 3 different valveclearances to choose from.
