82 XS650 Starts then dies

So last night I got around to everything. I took the carbs and gave them a squeeze and something went pop. Turned the petcock to prime and I no longer have a a fuel leak, ran the bike and no drip at all. I will continue to monitor but I think the "T" is now set in properly. I liked the idea of shrink wrapping the ends and was prepared to do that.

I missed a small gasket behind the cover breaker which was causing a tiny oil leak. Threw the gasket on there and boom oil leak fixed.

Everything seems to be functioning properly now. I think my next steps are to continue cleaning it and give it some fresh paint and get it on the road! I am so excited to finally be able to work on this bike more and actually ride it.

Once this weekend's snow melts, do give us a report on how the ride went !

Cal you will get to the end sometime and it will be very rewarding. Keep at it and dont give up you will get it running good. I know by experience lol it took me a full season to get all sorted but now runs great and is a fun bike to ride around. Very reliable and will take it anywheres. JC

Well stated, Superjet.
Like Buffalo NY winters ( ) , bike problems eventually get resolved, and then the sun comes out :)

Most of all the sorting out was failed parts that where made in China (rotor, ignition switch, clutch lever and cable) and entire teardown of a new to me set of carbs (butterfly seals & slide diaphragms). This was all within the first 200 or so kms. All replaced with good used OEM and Motion Pro cable and have never given me any problems.

So it has been a while but.... the bike is running. I have been learning and finding more things wrong with it along the way which I have been fixing and I have been removing 30+ years of dirt and grime (I am convinced the previous owner never cleaned it once). I just finished painting all the fairings and the tank after repairing a couple small dents and getting rid of as much little bits of surface rust I can. I need to wet sand, polish, wax and install all these parts. I re wrapped the entire wiring harness that I had to take apart to trace gremlins in the system and it looks pretty nice (pictures to follow).

I am missing a few bolts here and there but nothing I cant run to the hardware store and pick up. I found out that since I bought the bike the battery box has been missing some mounting points. Numbers 8-12 in the following image:

Yeah my bike never had those because I was always surprised at how the battery box was floating" in the frame on those two back mounting points. I looked on mikesxs with no luck but I have found a couple sets on EBay for like $20. Might have to pick those up as I have never seen these on my bike what so ever.

I hope that within the next couple weeks I can finish the paint work and start re-assembling. I am down to 8 bolts remaining to "finish" this motorcycle. I put finish because are we ever really finished and there are a few odds and ends to clean up and I assume once I start riding it I will tweak other things and find more parts to clean even better or take off and re-paint. Thank you everyone who has helped up until this point and if anyone is selling any of the parts I am looking for let me know I would rather buy them off members here than random(er) people on the internet.

Should be able to set you up on the mounts.
Anything else while I'm out rooting around in the bins?

Wow thanks!!! I can get all the bolts at a hardware store, if you don't have them, but the mounts and rubber parts I definitely can not. I know I need another rubber mount that holds the large plastic side cover and I also need the lower left plastic cover as I never had one of those (had to look at old photos to see if I lost it and nope never had it)

If Gary can't help you out with some used part, there is No Bull Used Bike parts in Marion NY not far from you. They have XS650 parts.

OMFG!!!! Even if Gary can't help me I am taking a trip out there! If they are open!!! If not I am going for a ride either way!!!

I also know that at one point 5twins I think said he has some extra parts I could look at and make an offer I am going to contact him and see if that offer still stands because he is 20 minutes away from me.

Okay getting a shopping list together because I am thinking of more things I need.

Battery box mounting bracket & hardware: I can get the hardware from a local store

Battery box rubber mounts: (Yamaha Part Number: 2J2-21729-00-00) https://www.partzilla.com/product/y...?ref=a3747b99f322990dfac46f7f696a871fe8df4c24

Side cover rubber grommet: (Yamaha Part Number: 90480-01401-00)(Partzilla) https://www.partzilla.com/product/yamaha/90480-01401-00?ref=a3747b99f322990dfac46f7f696a871fe8df4c24

Tachometer dampener: (Yamaha Part Number: 3H3-83513-00-00)(Bike Bandit)(Partzilla) https://www.partzilla.com/product/yamaha/3H3-83513-00-00

Left lower side cover:

Rear suspension acorn nut & washer: Local hardware store should have this

Relay rubber housing/holder/grommet: Can only find an assembly not just the rubber grommet, might only be sold as an assembly.

Rubber parts aren't very good from Mike's, they don't last long. You're better off buying O.E.M. and they still have all the side cover grommets. I recently ran across another parts place called Part Shark. It's not new, I just never saw it before. They have better prices than Partzilla on every part I've compared so far. For instance, here's an upper side cover mount from both .....

There is a mistake on the side cover parts drawing. They show a #5 and a #6 grommet for the tops of the large sidecovers when, in fact, you need two #6's (per side). The #5 grommet is actually what's used on all the lower mounts, also shown as #24 on the drawing .....

I know I have the battery box rubbers, should have the mounts too. I'll rummage around this afternoon if you like. I don't have any extra side cover mounts, in fact I had to buy some myself, lol.

I've been to NoBull several times. You need to sort of make an appointment because he's not there every day. Call and find out when he'll be there, then you can take a drive out. You do get better deals buying in person from him than going through his eBay listings. He's very much open to any reasonable offer on stuff.

Well I got those brackets but I'll hold off til you check the locals.
Be a bit careful they changed through the years but all LOOK like they are the same, there's left and right also.
Unfortunately that lower LH cover is the proverbial hens tooth, rubber stuff, yeah we are all looking for that.

Love everything you said but the only grommets I do not have is one #5 the rest are intact and I have cleaned them and they pop nicely and look to be in good condition. I am going to try to only replace what I need for now. This bike will be in no way cosmetically perfect so if it works it is staying on the bike and I will slowly update and fix things as I go.

Thanks for rummaging around I would love to (No offense to gggGary who has been super helpful) grab them locally if possible because I am getting so excited I'm not sure I could wait for them to be shipped. I also thought about Don Georges who had a whole bunch of other parts I needed and taking my list of parts over there and seeing what they might have in stock, they had all the clutch springs I needed and almost all the valve springs. So I might shoot over there if they are still open cause I heard they were closing at some point.

Thank I am going to check with 5twins because he is right here and if he has them then I can probably get them a lot sooner. But I will let you know which way I go with it. I also found a guy just North of me who took an xs650 chopped the back off it and welded it to a gokart frame. I asked him what other parts he might have laying around that he doesn't need... because that might be half a bike.

OK, checked my "stash" and I've got everything you need except, as mentioned, the side cover grommet. Also have the shock acorn nut and related washers. Send me a P.M. and we can hook up at your convenience.
