I'm rebuilding the caliper and MC on my barn find bike and have been supplied with a HEL HBF9354 1F hose by a UK eBay seller who listed it as fitting XS650s from 1972 onwards. The banjo fitting on one end fits the MC fine, but at the other end is an inline fitting, the thread of which doesn't fit the master cylinder. Should the hose just have a standard banjo fitting like the original does? Even if the thread did fit the caliper, it's hard to see how it would seal anyway.

Looking at your pic you have a different caliper than I have.

Yes, your '77 (and all later calipers) needs a line with banjo fittings on each end. That line you got is for '76 and earlier calipers. They had a short metal brake line coming out of them that took that threaded fitting. You can probably just get a banjo fitting that threads into the end of your line to replace the incorrect threaded one. That is, if the line you have will be long enough. The steel line on the older calipers was 6" or 8" long so if your line was made to mate up with it, it may be too short to reach the caliper without the steel line in place.

I don’t know about the UK but our local Hel distributor’s website has a builder function, you can just put in all the specs and hit order, you can even pick your colour, they normally take about a week to put it together before they ship it.

I see. Thanks. I'll get it changed I think.

Fortunately you're in the UK. Distance Selling regs give you the right to exchange the goods even if there is no fault and you simply bought the incorrect item.

You must offer a refund to customers if they’ve told you within 14 days of receiving their goods that they want to cancel. They have another 14 days to return the goods once they’ve told you.
You must refund the customer within 14 days of receiving the goods back. They do not have to provide a reason.

I bought mine as @stink78 did with an online builder. Got nice black ones.
