Jim's 1980 SG Miss September

Wow - amazing transformation!

...but does this mean you’re going to put on a set of apes and sprinkle leather fringe all over the bike?
Well... Greg's got all those 8" over speedo cables.... so I'm thinkin' late 60's easy rider. :smoke:

5 TWINS: How many times have you put up the photo of the distorted oil tube base fitting ?
Do you really think they are all like that ? There are 3 sources for XS parts in this world - OEM
most of which are discontinued or are New OLD stock, USED and aftermarket ( Do you think all
aftermarket parts are made incorrectly ? Do you think that there are multiple factories making aftermarket
XS650 Parts ? XS650 owners are lucky that anyone will make parts to keep these antiques on the road.
If a part is made you have to buy a production run ( 500 to 10,000 Pc. or you will never see them ).

650 trader do you think it is OK for venders to ship parts that look like that?
We all know who repeatedly did EXACTLY that and that is why there is such a big and vocal anti mikesXS group here.
MikesXS made the bed, too bad it's so uncomfortable.
By the way I'm not anti mikes and have bought thousands of dollars worth of product from them. I do watch for reviews and am a bit selective about what parts come from there.
PS I'm going to be needing several sets of early mufflers this winter.

gggGary - Its NOT ok but that's what you get when the supplier doesn't know what they are looking at.
Mikesxs has gone thru a number of tech guys since 2010 and I was just pointing out that the fitting
photo has shown up many times for many years. I doubt that the whole run was like that. I forgot one
more parts source- #4 the guys that make a handfull by stealing time and material from their workplace.
When Mike started in 1989 there was hardly anything available except from 650 Central's predecessor
and they charged Big bucks for the parts and used shipping as a major profit booster.

:hijack:

I believe discussion like this is worthy of another thread. Personally, I'm glad to have MikesXS, but I have had to throw away parts right out of the box over the years. I usually look to OEM or a good used source first. MikesXS trained me to do that. The reputation goes with the name.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Felt good to get out and ride finally. First time I've been able to since my foot surgery. My neighbor Jeff drug out his Beemer ADV and off we went. Burnt up a whole tank of gas out in the country twisties.
The good: I hate to brag... well maybe just a little ... but I nailed the stomp shifter. Absolutely perfect. Easy shifting... heel and toe were right where they needed to be and unobtrusive when not shifting. Having grown up on Honda's and brit bikes the muscle memory was still there. Within 5 min. I wasn't even thinkin' about it.

The bad: left carb pops and sputters sumpin' fierce 'till it's warmed up.... and then just doesn't want to settle down. Idle will hang for a bit, and then act perfectly normal... then back to hangin'. I was hopin' a couple hrs and a tank of gas would clear it up, but no such luck. Guess I'll pull 'em off and have a look.

The ugly: left cam cover has always had a bit of a weep. Now it's gotten bad enough to leave oil residue on the front of the left side cover. Pulled the cover off and the inside of the housing is soaked... but the seal is bone dry. Hmmm...

All things considered, I'm happy... and we didn't exactly buy these bikes because they're maintenance free, did we.

Back at the hanger...
