Hi Guys,
I have, what I've discovered is a bitzer, which I am rebuilding, I was told it was a 1980? even rego papers say that, but when trying to purchase a new fuel cap discovered it has at least a 74/75 tank.
Anyway it also came without a Taco, I am now looking to put one on, but need the drive.
Are all drives the same? as there is various numbers around and i would like to purchase it only once.
Cheers
Gary

Welcome to the forum Gary!!
I'm assuming here that you mean the tachometer drive? As far as I know, all years are the same. The possible exception would be the 70 and 71 motors... but even those might be the same. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Hi Jim and Thanks,
Yes the Tachometer Drive, for some unknown reason someone removed it?
The ones I've looked at, all look the same but just needed to check there wasn't different gearing.
Thanks again

Welcome Gary1965,

Post up the vin no and we can help identify, better still some pics as well. Aussie bikes 80 and 81 differ to the US model 80/81......Often standard tanks, 74-79, are put on Specials, 78-83, as they are larger.

Yes 74/75 tanks have a different gas cap and cant be replaced by after market as there aren't any made.

Any Taco drive from 74-83 should be the same ........there was a change on the real early models 71-72..............Probably best to stay away from them.

Hi Mate,
I have stripped the bike completely so Photos might not show too much?
Cheers

Need a better view of the front forks but going by the caliper on the rear of the forks it looks to be a 76C. 74/75 Tank. ...............Can't see but if there are 2 mounts for guard braces at the bottom of the fork lowers then the forks are 34mm and the brake rotor and caliper does support that although the guard is from a later, 77-83, front end.

Need a vin no to confirm

Is this a US import???.......Aussie 76C had twin disk front brakes.

I'll get engine and frame numbers tomorrow and post them.
I purchased the bike in Townsville in 1992 and was riding it until 1999, then parked it wait for rebuild.
As I said it's been thrown together, I didn't even know it had a stater motor until I discovered two core festoon wire coming from it after about 12 months.

Carbs on a 76C are linked with an angle piece of steel and a single throttle cable..........Choke, (en-richer), is on both carbs bodies and has a rod connecting them
Pics stolen from mailman

74/75 carbs are separate and have twin throttle cables........Choke is on one carb body, and has a tube running to the second carb

Its just a guess - but I would say that the bike on the left (the red one) is a Canadian model. It is identical to my beloved, but troublesome Lucille - a 1976 XS650C. I think that most of the US models in 1976 had a single disk brake but were painted in the blue-on-blue colour scheme.

I like the thread title - Taco Drive - it sounds like an address in San Antonio Texas. It must be right around the corner from Chimichanga Circle and fairly close to the Re-Fried Beans Sewage Treatment Plant. :lmao:

According to the parts diagram, the tach drive rod was the same for all models. The associated parts were also the same with the exception of the collar that the cable attaches to. The first year model (1970 XS1) had a different one, so probably a good idea to avoid a 1970 assembly. When installing, be sure to use the shim washer (#8 below) on the bottom of the rod. Besides shimming the up-down play out of it, it keeps the gear from grinding into the case .....

Edited my post.....did look like the question related to the pics.
Reference only pics/brochure showing the difference in colour and a twin disc set up............The US did get red 76C's FWIF

Interesting - I have always seen surprised looks when I was in the US with my bike.

Met a Yamaha Franchise dealer who was from Brisbane Queensland.......... Back in the day the different States dealt with Yamaha on a state basis, not country wide. Said he ordered some red 76C's when Aussie had blue C's marked as colour for our country. The US may have been the same and some dealers could have as well.

Pic from a guy who posted this on here claiming it is/was original.

Hi Guys thanks for all the responses.
The way I see it does not matter as the gear drive ratios are the same on all bikes except the early models.
And as long as the spacer/washer is fitted.
Thanks again.
